[Music] the world has enough wealth and resources to ensure that the entire human race enjoys a decent standard of living yet people in some countries continue to live in Desperate poverty in this video I will show you the top 10 poorest country in the world 2023 this ranking is based on the latest GDP per capita in current prices from international monetary fund number 10. Niger with the GDP per capita of only 613 this country has a very low score in human development index of only 0.400 80 of its landlocked territory are covered by the Sahara desert with a rapidly growing population dependent upon small-scale agriculture Niger is under threat from desertification food insecurity is high as our disease and mortality rates recurrent clashes of the army with the Islamic State Isis affiliate Boko Haram have displaced thousands in 2021 Niger inaugurated a new president an ex-teacher and former interior Minister Mohammed basma in its first Democratic transfer of power now considered a bright spot on the continent the country saw its economy expand by 11 last year making it the 10th of the world's poorest countries number nine Mozambique with the GDP per capita of only 587 this nation has a very low score in human development index of only 0.446 this former Portuguese Colony has often posted average GDP growth rates of more than 7 in the past decade yet it remains mired among the 10 poorest countries in the world attacks by Islamic Insurgent groups since 2017 have plagued the gas Rich northern part of the country still according to the IMF and its sister institution the World Bank the medium-term economic outlook for Mozambique is positive with growth expected to accelerate to 5 this year and 8 the next year number eight Yemen with the GDP per capita of only 573 and a low human development index of only 0.501 Yemen has long been one of the poorest countries in the Middle East and North Africa and is now one of the world's worst humanitarian crises the fighting raging since early 2015 has devastated its economy leading to severe food insecurity and destroying critical infrastructure the UN estimated that 24.1 million people development index of only 0.501 Madagascar is the world's fifth largest island situated in the Indian Ocean off the coast of southern Africa despite considerable natural resources however its population of about 28 million has one of the world's highest poverty rates this country is very poor due to frequent political instability weak infrastructure restrictive business environment and declining agricultural productivity these factors reduce the opportunity for development in Madagascar and decrease the people's living conditions number five Central African Republic with the GDP per capita of only 534 and a very low human development index of only 0.404 Central African Republic is rich in Gold oil uranium and diamonds but inhabited by very poor people and has been among the poorest countries in the world for the most part of a decade the sharp increase in essential good prices that followed the war in Ukraine simultaneously with cycles of severe flooding and dry spells has only brought more pain the United Nations office for the coordination of humanitarian Affairs estimates that approximately 2.7 million people almost half of countries population are experiencing acute food insecurity number four Malawi with the GDP per capita of only 496 and a low score in human development only 0.512 it is one of Africa's smallest nations Malawi's economy is largely dependent upon rain-fed crops that remains vulnerable to weather-related shocks food insecurity in rural parts is extremely high Malawi has enjoyed stable governments since it gained independence from Britain in 1964. but in 2020 the country 's constitutional Court an old former president Peter mutturika's win for re-election Theologian and politician Lazarus chakra was sworn in his place and today structural changes have been slow to materialize number three South Sudan with a GDP per capita of only 467 and a very low human development of only 0.385 it is one of the poorest of the world's poor countries South Sudan has been wrecked by violence since its Creation in 2011. the country is rich in oil reserves but abundance Fosters political and social divisions inequality corruption and warfare the majority of the population is employed in traditional agriculture violence and extreme climate events often prevent Farmers from planting or harvesting crops UNICEF estimates that over half of its population around 7.8 million people are likely to face acute food insecurity this 2023 [Music] number two Sierra Leone with the GDP per capita of only 415 and a very low human development score of only 0.477 this country is located in West Africa has suffered from various conflicts and injustices including a civil war that lasted from 1991 to 2002 as a result Sierra Leone lacks significant development as a country government corruption a lack of an established education system absence of civil rights and poor infrastructure are the primary factors that contributes to Sierra Leone's overwhelming levels of poverty number one Burundi with the GDP per capita of only 249 and a very low human development score of only 0.426 Burundi lacks natural resources and has been scarred by a 12-year Civil War contributing to its ranking of poorest country in the world with about 80 percent of burundi's roughly 13 million citizens relying on subsistence agriculture food insecurity is almost twice as high as the average for sub-Saharan African countries furthermore access to water and sanitation remains very low and less than five percent of the population has electricity president
