May 13, 2025

Jeremy’s IT Lab - CCNA 200-301 Ethernet LAN Switching Lab

Introduction

  • Course: Complete and free CCNA 200-301 course.
  • Focus: Ethernet LAN Switching concepts from day 5 and day 6 videos.
  • Network Topology: Two switches each connecting two PCs.

Lab Overview

  1. Initial Network State:
    • Both switches have empty MAC address tables.
    • All PCs have empty ARP tables.

Step 1: PC1 Pings PC3

  • Objective: Determine messages sent over the network and recipients.
  • Process:
    • ARP Request:
      • Sent by PC1 to find PC3’s MAC address.
      • Broadcast message received by all devices (PC2, PC4, SW1, SW2) except PC1.
    • ARP Reply:
      • Sent by PC3 to PC1.
      • Unicast message passing through SW2, SW1, received only by PC1.
    • ICMP Echo Request:
      • Sent by PC1 to PC3.
      • Unicast message received only by PC3.
    • ICMP Echo Reply:
      • Sent by PC3 to PC1.
      • Unicast message passing through SW2, SW1, received only by PC1.
  • Note: Multiple pings are sent (4 by default on Windows PCs).

Step 2: Verification with Packet Tracer

  • Simulation Mode: Used to visualize message flow.
  • Ping Command: Typed in command prompt (ping 192.168.1.3).
  • Observation:
    • ARP and ICMP messages appear confirming process.
    • Ethernet header fields (Preamble, SFD, etc.) reviewed.

Step 3: Learning MAC Addresses

  • Objective: Let switches learn MAC addresses.
  • Process:
    • PC1 to PC3 Ping: Reinforces MAC learning on switches.
    • PC2 to PC4 Ping: Allows switches to learn additional MAC addresses.

Step 4: Identifying MAC Addresses

  • Show Commands:
    • On SW1: show mac address-table
      • Identify PC1 (FastEthernet 0/1) and PC2 (FastEthernet 0/2) MAC addresses.
    • On SW2: show mac address-table
      • Identify PC3 (FastEthernet 0/1) and PC4 (FastEthernet 0/2) MAC addresses.

Step 5: Clearing MAC Address Tables

  • Objective: Clear dynamic MAC addresses.
  • Command: clear mac address-table dynamic
    • Applied on both SW1 and SW2.
  • Verification: Use show mac address-table to confirm tables are empty.

Conclusion

  • Lab Completion: Successfully completed all steps.
