Paper Mache Mask Making Workshop
Introduction
Creating custom-fitted paper mache masks.
Use of aluminum foil as a mold.
Alternatives if aluminum foil is unavailable.
Materials Needed
Main Mold Materials:
Heavy duty aluminum foil (preferred) or regular foil: 3 sheets.
Alternative: Newspaper or paper bags, wadded up to head size.
Additional Supplies:
Saran wrap or plastic wrap.
Tape.
Paper mache: 1/4 cup flour, 1 cup water.
Creating the Mold
With Aluminum Foil:
Use three layers of foil for thickness.
Mold each sheet individually to the face: eyes, nose, and mouth.
Trim edges for easier handling.
Ensure mold fits well; adjust with help if needed.
Without Aluminum Foil:
Use wadded paper shaped close to head size.
Secure with tape and cover with plastic wrap.
Inspiration and Design
Look into world masks for design inspiration.
Consider additional features for masks: ears, human or animal.
Preparing Paper Mache
Mix flour and water; heat on stove or microwave.
Cool before use; store in refrigerator if needed.
Apply sparingly, as demonstrated in a previous bird project.
Applying Paper Mache
First Layer Application:
Apply paper mache gently to avoid collapsing the mold.
Start with a few spoonfuls, pressing carefully.
Ensure smooth application with no protruding papers.
Second Layer Application:
After smoothing the first layer, apply the second.
Ensure strong edges for attaching strings later.
Two or more layers recommended, depending on thickness desired.
Drying Process
Allow the mask to dry overnight after the second layer.
Final touches:
Smooth out any rough areas, particularly around the chin.
Next Steps
For Tomorrow's Session:
Add features such as ears and cut eye holes for wearability.
Apply additional layers as needed.
Final Remarks:
Let the mask dry thoroughly before further decoration or use.
