Rules of Greco-Roman Wrestling
Objective
- Wrestle the opponent and win by either pin or points.
- Popular version worldwide, contested at the Olympic Games.
Match Details
- Two wrestlers of similar weight.
- Mat: 9m diameter rubber mat.
- Wrestlers wear red or blue.
Rules
- Only use torso and upper body to attack.
- No use of legs to attack or defend.
Winning by Pin
- Pin both shoulder blades to the floor for one second.
- Known as winning by fall or pin.
Winning by Points
- Takedown: Control opponent on the mat. Scores 2-5 points depending on type.
- Escape: From defensive position to neutral. Scores 1 point.
- Reversal: From bottom to top in defensive position. Scores 1 point.
- Exposure: Expose opponent’s back while in control. Scores 2 or 3 points.
- Penalty Points: Opponent scores for your illegal moves.
Match Structure
- Two periods of 3 minutes each.
- Must win 2 periods for victory.
- If tied, a third period determines the winner.
Additional Rules
- Caution: Illegal moves or lack of wrestling intent leads to caution or penalty.
- Out of Bounds: Stepping outside the circle gives opponent 1 point.
- Passivity: Not starting or wrestling leads to caution and point for opponent.
- Par Terre Position: Initiated after a caution, top wrestler has advantage.
Period Format
- Subdivided into 1-minute sub-periods.
- First minute: neutral position.
- After one minute: Par Terre position with higher scorer on top.
Technical Superiority
- 8-point advantage ends contest with technical superiority win.
Wins by Other Means
- Injury: Opponent wins if wrestler can't continue.
- Forfeit: Opponent wins if wrestler can't start.
- Disqualification: Three cautions or a ban.
