Cast Removal Procedure with Delta Cast Saw

Introduction

  • Quick and clean removal using Delta Cast Saw and vacuum

Preparations

  • Positioning:
    • Patient lies on their back
    • Lower leg turned out
  • Equipments:
    • Delta cast saw
    • Vacuum

Cast Removal Process

Inside Lower Leg Cut

  1. Start Position:
    • Begin proximally on the inside of the lower leg
  2. Sawing Technique:
    • Use small sections at a time
    • Allow saw blade to cut through cast, avoiding padding and stockinette
  3. Continuation:
    • Continue distally past the ankle along the foot
  4. Precaution:
    • Avoid cutting over bony prominences (e.g., malleolus)
  5. Redo:
    • Re-saw any incomplete sections

Outside of the Cast Cut

  1. Patient Positioning:
    • Patient lies on their side
  2. Cutting Line:
    • Start distally and move proximally along the outside of the cast
  3. Sawing Technique:
    • Bit by bit, especially at the ankle (90-degree angle cut)
    • Saw until the middle of the foot, then move proximally

Scissors Cutting

  1. Outer Saw Line:
    • Cut from top of lower leg moving down
    • Cut from distal end of the foot towards the ankle
  2. Inner Saw Line:
    • Start cutting from the foot towards the ankle
    • Continue from top of the leg moving down
  3. Ensure:
    • Cut through the padding and top layer of stockinette

Final Steps

  1. Separation:
    • Cut along proximal edge of stockinette for separation of cast halves
  2. Removal:
    • Remove top half
    • Cut through second layer of stockinette
    • Remove second half and stockinette completely

  • Delta cast saw and vacuum by BSN medical

  • Ensure safety to avoid cutting skin and damaging underlying tissues.
