Video Connectors Overview

VGA (Video Graphics Array)

  • Connector Type: DB-15 (often referred to as DE15)
  • Color: Unique blue color associated with VGA
  • Audio: Does not support audio integration; separate audio connection needed
  • Signal Type: Analog
    • Signal degrades over 5-10 meters, causing a fuzzy screen
  • Use: Recognizable by its unique 15-pin connector

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface)

  • Connector Type: 19-pin proprietary connector
  • Features:
    • Digital signal
    • Supports both video and audio in one cable
  • Cabling: Can extend up to 20 meters before experiencing digital artifacts

DisplayPort

  • Signal Type: Digital, capable of sending packetized video and audio
  • Connector Types:
    • Standard DisplayPort
    • Mini DisplayPort
  • Features:
    • Hooks for locking into place, requires a release mechanism to remove
    • Passively compatible with HDMI using a DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable

DVI (Digital Visual Interface)

  • Signal Type: Video only, no audio
  • Types:
    • DVI-A (Analog)
    • DVI-D (Digital)
    • DVI-I (Integrated; supports both analog and digital)
  • Link Types:
    • Single Link: 3.7 Gbps, supports 60 FPS HD
    • Dual Link: Double the throughput, supports 85 FPS HD

Video Adapter Overview

  • Example video adapter supports:
    • HDMI output
    • DisplayPort outputs
    • DVI connectors (both integrated and digital)
  • Identification: Ability to recognize connectors on video adapters and cables
