Math with Mr. J - Fraction Review

Overview

  • This lecture provides a quick refresher on operations with fractions: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • For a more detailed explanation, other videos are linked in the description.

Adding Fractions

  1. Example: 5/8 + 1/3
    • Find a Common Denominator: Necessary step before adding.
      • Denominators: 8 and 3
      • Least Common Multiple (LCM): 24
    • Rewrite Fractions:
      • Convert to equivalent fractions with a denominator of 24.
      • 5/8 = 15/24 (since 8 x 3 = 24, and 5 x 3 = 15)
      • 1/3 = 8/24 (since 3 x 8 = 24, and 1 x 8 = 8)
    • Add Numerators:
      • 15 + 8 = 23
      • Result: 23/24
    • Simplify: Already in simplest form.

Subtracting Fractions

  1. Example: 1/2 - 2/5
    • Find a Common Denominator:
      • Denominators: 2 and 5
      • LCM: 10
    • Rewrite Fractions:
      • 1/2 = 5/10 (1 x 5 = 5)
      • 2/5 = 4/10 (2 x 2 = 4)
    • Subtract Numerators:
      • 5 - 4 = 1
      • Result: 1/10
    • Simplify: Already in simplest form.

Multiplying Fractions

  1. Example: 2/8 x 1/4
    • Multiply Straight Across:
      • Numerators: 2 x 1 = 2
      • Denominators: 8 x 4 = 32
      • Result: 2/32
    • Simplify:
      • Common factor of 2
      • Divide both numerator and denominator by 2
      • Simplified result: 1/16

Dividing Fractions

  1. Example: 5/6 ÷ 2/7
    • Keep, Switch, Flip:
      • Keep the first fraction: 5/6
      • Switch division to multiplication
      • Flip the second fraction: 7/2
    • Multiply:
      • 5 x 7 = 35
      • 6 x 2 = 12
      • Result: 35/12 (improper fraction)
    • Convert to Mixed Number:
      • 35 ÷ 12 = 2 with a remainder of 11
      • Mixed number: 2 11/12
    • Simplification: 11/12 cannot be simplified further.
