Lecture on Pulse Sites in the Human Body

Introduction

  • Channel: Surgical Knowledge (YouTube)
  • Topic: Pulse sites in the human body
  • Definition of Pulse:
    • Measurement of heart rate (beats per minute)
    • Indicates heart rhythm
  • All arteries have a pulse, but it is easily felt where the vessel reaches the body surface.
  • Total Pulse Points: Nine

Pulse Points

  1. Temporal Pulse

    • Origin: External carotid artery
    • Location: In front of the tragus, above the zygomatic arch
    • Use: Head-to-toe assessment of the head
  2. Carotid Pulse

    • Commonly used during CPR in adults
    • Supplies blood to the neck, face, and brain
  3. Apical Pulse

    • Assessed during head-to-toe examination
    • Important before administering digoxin (should be ≥ 60 BPM in adults)
  4. Brachial Pulse

    • Location: Upper arm
    • Branches: Radial and ulnar arteries
    • Use: Measures blood pressure, pulse check in infants during CPR
  5. Radial Pulse

    • Location: Lower arm
    • Origin: Brachial artery
    • Use: Common site to count heart rate in adults
  6. Femoral Pulse

    • Location: Groin
    • Provides circulation to the legs
    • Palpation: Deeply below the inguinal ligament between the pubic symphysis and anterior superior iliac spine
  7. Popliteal Pulse

    • Location: Behind the knee
    • Origin: Femoral artery
    • Deep artery; important in patients with vascular issues
  8. Posterior Tibial Pulse

    • Along with the Dorsalis Pedis, assessed during head-to-toe examination
  9. Dorsalis Pedis Pulse

    • Location: Lateral to the extensor hallucis longus tendon
    • Technique: Palpate down the tendon, then to the side
