Lecture on Classification of Skills

Overview

  • Session relevant for both GCSE PE and A-level PE students.
  • Focus on the classification of skills in sports.
  • Skills are divided into categories: open vs closed, basic vs complex, and low vs high organization.

Classification of Skills

Open and Closed Skills

  • Open Skills:

    • Occur in dynamic environments (e.g., open play in sports like football).
    • Require adaptation due to constantly changing scenarios (e.g., passing in football).
    • Examples: passing between defenders in football, interception in netball.
  • Closed Skills:

    • Performed in stable, predictable environments (e.g., free throw in basketball).
    • Can be executed without external interference, allowing for practice and routine.
    • Examples: basketball free throw, rugby penalty kick, football penalty shot.
  • Skill Continuum:

    • Skills can range from most open to most closed on a continuum.

Basic and Complex Skills

  • Basic Skills:

    • Simple to perform, often taught first.
    • Require fewer body movements and little pressure.
    • Examples: instep pass in football, chest pass in netball.
  • Complex Skills:

    • Require intricate body movements and are performed under pressure.
    • Examples: football overhead kick, smashing a tennis ball, Indian dribble in hockey.
  • Skill Continuum:

    • Ranges from basic to complex based on difficulty and learning sequence.

Low and High Organization Skills

  • Low Organization Skills:

    • Easily broken down into subroutines, can be practiced separately.
    • Examples: swimming techniques, basketball set shot, triple jump.
  • High Organization Skills:

    • Difficult to break into parts, often need to be practiced as a whole.
    • Examples: somersault in trampolining, cartwheel, golf swing.
  • Skill Continuum:

    • Ranges from low to high organization based on ease of decomposition and practice.
