Networking and Connector Types Lecture

RJ11 Connector

  • Usage: Traditional analog telephones, DSL networks
  • Description:
    • Six-position, two-conductor connector
    • Can have up to six positions and four conductors
  • Applications: Phone connections, DSL modems

RJ45 Connector

  • Usage: Ethernet connections
  • Description:
    • Eight-position, eight-conductor connector
  • Applications: Ethernet, other network types
  • Comparison:
    • Smaller RJ11 vs. larger RJ45
    • Example: Both used on a DSL modem (RJ11 for DSL, RJ45 for LAN)

F Connector

  • Usage: Cable television and internet
  • Description:
    • Threaded connection for coaxial cable
  • Applications: Cable TV, Cable internet (DOCSIS standard)
  • Example: Male F connector connecting to female connector on a cable modem

Punch Down Blocks

  • Usage: Data centers, large computer rooms
  • Description:
    • Wires punched into a block for network connections
    • Connector added on top or other side of block
  • Example: Close-up view of wiring block
    • Permanent attachment for easier wire management
  • Applications: Wired connections in a data center
  • Tool: Punch down tool to connect wires

USB Connectors

  • Types:
    • USB 1.1/2.0: Standard A, Standard B, Mini B, Micro B
    • USB 3.0: Newer Standard B, Micro B with higher speeds
    • USB-C: Double-sided, smaller than Micro B, used for peripherals, computers, and more
  • Features: Higher speeds, additional pins for USB 3.0, multi-functionality for USB-C

Molex Connector

  • Usage: Providing power inside computers
  • Description:
    • 4-pin power connector
    • Provides 12V and 5V power
  • Applications: Powering hard drives, optical drives, fans

Lightning Connector

  • Usage: Apple devices (iPhones, iPads)
  • Description:
    • 8-pin connector
    • Allows for additional power output
    • Reversible (no top or bottom)
  • Comparison: Unlike micro USB, it can be plugged in either orientation

DB9 Connector

  • Usage: Infrastructure devices, serial connections
  • Description:
    • D-sub miniature connector, size B, supports nine pins
  • Applications: Originally for modems, currently for switches, routers in data centers
  • Example: Fiber switch with DB9 serial console for command line management
