Anatomy of Teeth

Introduction

  • Teeth are not considered bones despite appearances.
  • Anatomists distinguish teeth from bones due to key differences.

Main Parts of a Tooth

  1. Crown

    • Visible portion above the gums.
    • Covered by enamel.
    • Enamel protects dentin and pulp chamber.
  2. Neck

    • Also known as the cemento-enamel junction or cervical line.
    • Attachment area for gums.
    • Transition point from enamel to cementum.
  3. Root

    • Extends from neck to root's apex.
    • Secured to alveolar bone socket.
    • Covered by cementum.

Tooth Tissue Types

  1. Enamel

    • Hard outer layer of the crown.
    • Composed mostly of minerals (e.g., hydroxyapatite).
    • Susceptible to acid damage (from plaque or acidic foods).
  2. Cementum

    • Covers the root.
    • Formed by cementoblasts.
    • Lower mineral content than enamel and dentin.
    • Part of the periodontium.
  3. Dentin

    • Found beneath enamel and cementum.
    • Composed of 70% mineral content.
    • Contains dentinal tubules that supply nutrients.
    • Sensitive to damage.
  4. Pulp

    • Located within the pulp cavity.
    • Contains odontoblasts, vessels, and nerves.
    • Provides nutrition, sensation, and immune defense.
