Applying TED Hose to a Resident

Overview

TED hose, or compression stockings, are used to improve circulation in residents who may be bedridden or have limited mobility. Proper application is crucial to ensure comfort and effectiveness.

Materials Needed

  • TED hose or compression stockings (typically found in the resident's room)

Steps to Apply TED Hose

  1. Preparation

    • Knock on the resident’s door and introduce yourself (e.g., "Hi Annie, I'm Myra")
    • Wash hands thoroughly
    • Provide privacy for the resident
  2. Orientation of the TED Hose

    • Ensure any writing on the TED hose is readable from the outside (not backwards)
    • Locate the heel marker to ensure correct placement on the resident’s heel
  3. Methods to Prepare the TED Hose

    • Rolling down the top: Simplifies application
    • Gathering the hose: Gather the material down to the heel marker
    • Turning inside out: Pinch the heel marker and turn it inside out
  4. Application

    • Ask for the resident's permission to lift their leg
    • Check the heel marker is on the correct backside
    • Place the hose over the resident's foot up to the heel
    • Ensure the heel marker aligns perfectly before proceeding further
    • Smooth out any wrinkles to prevent discomfort
    • Bring the hose up the leg to the knee or thigh depending on hose length (knee-high or thigh-high)
    • Ensure the stocking covers the toes completely without a band causing discomfort

Additional Considerations

  • Usage Timing

    • TED hose should be put on in the morning when the resident is lying flat to minimize leg swelling
    • Typically worn throughout the day
    • Removed in the evening and washed
  • Daily Care

    • Rinse out the TED hose with soap and water in the sink
    • Hang to dry over a hanger overnight

Purpose

  • The TED hose helps prevent fluid pooling in the legs by aiding circulation back to the heart, effective particularly when residents are sitting.
