Drop-Back Passing Concepts

1. Hank Concept

  • Full Field Read: Read after snap, not pre-snap.
  • Primary Target: Hank route (over the ball, 8-10 yards, settles).
  • Outside Routes: Curl-flat combination on each side.
  • Quarterback's Process:
    • Read Hank route first.
    • If covered, move to curl-flat on the side of the coverage.
    • Five-step drop, throw on fifth or hitch step if moving to curl-flat.
    • Progression: High to low on curl-flat side.
    • Never go backward in progression.
  • Ideal Situations: Great for third-down conversions (e.g., third and six).

2. Drive Concept

  • Formation: Optimal in 3x1 formation (three receivers on one side).
  • Triangle Foundation:
    • Shallow cross route (driver).
    • Basic route (small dig) from same side.
    • Check down to back after protection.
  • Read Process: Low to high progression.
    • Versus zone: Sit down.
    • Versus man: Run.
  • Tags and Alerts:
    • X tag for single receiver side (matchup based).
    • Coverage alert in quarters for potential post throw.
  • Example Call:
    • "Trey Right Zip, Two Jet, Z Drive, X Out"

3. All-Go Special

  • Set Up: Three-by-one formation, four vertical routes.
  • Reading Coverage:
    • Open Coverage: Two up on safety, read inside-out.
      • Bender route must be on top of linebacker.
    • Closed Coverage: Two up on middle safety.
      • Prefer seam route (hole shot).
  • Wide Receiver Roles:
    • Adjust routes based on safety's response.
    • Conversion routes vs. closed coverage (comebacks/dropouts).
  • Key Points:
    • Simplicity for QB, complexity for defense.
    • Run out of various formations.
    • Effective against multiple coverages.
