How to Add a New Patient in Open EMR

Introduction

  • Objective: Learn how to add a new patient to the Open EMR system.

Steps to Add a New Patient

Logging In

  • Use a standard receptionist account to log in to Open EMR.

Adding a New Patient

  1. Access New Patient Form

    • Hover over the "Patient" tab.
    • Select "New/Search".
  2. Mandatory Fields

    • Fill out the four required fields:
      • First Name
      • Last Name
      • Date of Birth
      • Sex
  3. Additional Information

    • Optionally, enter additional information:
      • Assign a provider
      • Acknowledge receipt of HIPAA compliance paperwork
      • Set language preference to English
    • Click "Create New Patient"
  4. Duplicate Check

    • Open EMR automatically checks for duplicate records.
    • For this example, proceed by clicking "Confirm Create New Patient".

Viewing and Editing Patient Information

  • Once created, the system redirects to the patient summary screen.
  • Navigate through various tabs to view entered information.
  • To edit information, click the "Edit" button next to the relevant section.

Adding an Address

  • Click "Edit" next to demographics.
  • Go to the "Contact" tab and enter the address.
  • Click "Save".
  • Verify entry by hovering and selecting the "Contact" tab.

Handling Duplicate Entries

Attempting to Add an Existing Patient

  1. Repeat the New Patient Process

    • Hover over "Patient" and select "New Patient".
    • Enter the same information as before (First Name, Last Name, Date of Birth, Sex).
  2. Duplicate Detection

    • This time, the system identifies a duplicate patient.
    • If confirmed as a duplicate, click on the patient row to access the existing patient summary screen.
