Overview
This lecture covers essential AutoCAD commands and tools, focusing on drawing, selecting, modifying objects, and managing file units and settings.
Command Prompt and Command Access
- The command prompt is where you activate AutoCAD tools by typing commands or shortcuts.
- Each tool in the ribbon has a command and a corresponding keyboard shortcut.
- Commands can be activated by clicking, typing the full name, or using a shortcut (e.g., 'L' for Line).
- Familiarity with keyboard shortcuts improves efficiency.
Drawing Tools
- 'Line' creates individual line segments between two points.
- 'Polyline' (PL) creates a continuous, connected set of lines; selected as one object.
- 'Circle' (C) draws circles by specifying a center point and radius.
- 'Rectangle' (REC) creates rectangles by selecting two diagonal corners.
- Drawing with specific dimensions: type values and use apostrophe for feet (e.g., 2') or quotation mark for inches (e.g., 10").
Units and Saving
- Set drawing units with the 'UNITS' command; use 'Architectural' for feet and inches.
- Save files regularly with the save command or Ctrl+S.
Selection Methods
- Single-click selects one object.
- Right-to-left (green box) selects all objects it touches.
- Left-to-right (blue box) selects only objects fully enclosed.
Basic Modify Tools
- 'Move' (M) repositions objects; specify a point and a new location or input a distance.
- 'Copy' (CO) duplicates selected objects; can create multiple copies.
- 'Rotate' (RO) rotates objects around a base point by a given angle (e.g., 45° or 90°).
- 'Mirror' (MI) creates a mirrored copy over a specified axis; can keep or erase original.
- 'Trim' (TR) removes parts of objects at intersections.
- 'Extend' adds length to lines up to the next intersection.
Managing Mistakes and File History
- Delete selected objects with the Delete key.
- Undo actions with Ctrl+Z or via the quick access toolbar.
- Use the command history list to revert to earlier states.
Key Terms & Definitions
- Command Prompt — The interface area to enter commands and view instructions.
- Shortcut — Keyboard letter(s) activating a command (e.g., L for Line).
- Polyline — A joined sequence of lines treated as one object.
- Trim — Removes parts of objects at intersections.
- Extend — Expands lines to reach another object.
- Architectural Units — Measurement system using feet and inches.
Action Items / Next Steps
- Review the PDF of AutoCAD command shortcuts on Canvas.
- Set units to 'Architectural' before drawing.
- Regularly save your work using Ctrl+S.
