Lecture Notes - Module 1.1: Computers in Our Everyday Lives

Introduction

  • Focus on why we use computers and types of computer systems.
  • Combination of previous grades (10, 11) and new grade 12 material.
  • Key topics: Categories of users and convergence.

Why We Use Computers

  • Efficiency: Saves time, labor, resources.
  • Accuracy: Provides more accurate results.
  • Reliability: Consistent performance.
  • Communication:
    • Eliminates time and distance issues.
    • Facilitates global communication and social interaction.

Types of Computer Systems

  • Considerations when comparing devices: power, use, size, software.
  • Non-portable Computers:
    • Desktops: Not meant for mobility, larger, more powerful.
    • Servers: Often more powerful than consumer desktops.
    • Entry-level computers: Cheaper, lower specs.
  • Portable Computers:
    • Laptops, Tablets, Smartphones: All-in-one design, easy to carry.
    • Modular design: Allows for hardware customization, less so in portables.

Modular Design

  • Desktops offer modularity (e.g., change CPU, memory, graphics card).
  • Laptops and smartphones are less modular.

New Technologies

  • Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs):
    • Used in VR and AR.
    • VR: Fully digital environment.
    • AR: Digital overlay on the real world.
  • Drones/Unmanned Aerial Vehicles:
    • Aircraft devices, not piloted.
    • Uses: Surveillance, delivery (e.g., Amazon).

Categories of Users

  1. Personal User:
    • Limited office tasks, entertainment, social networking.
  2. Small Office Home Office (SOHO) User:
    • Tasks vary based on business type.
    • Entry-level computers for admin functions.
  3. Power User:
    • High-end hardware/software needed.
    • Includes gamers, video editors, engineers, etc.
  4. Mobile User:
    • Needs technology on-the-go.
    • Uses smartphones/tablets for various tasks.

Convergence

  • Trend of combining separate technologies/functions into a single device.
  • Example: Smartphones and tablets.
