Diagnosing Your Amana Washing Machine

Overview

  • How to diagnose critical systems in Amana washing machines (or similar models with a large timer cycle selection knob and six LED lights beneath it)
  • Tips on using findings to repair the machine yourself
  • Requires a few common household tools
  • Aim: Free and easy fixes
  • Presented by Chip, who guides viewers on washer/dryer repair and starting a repair business

Initial Steps

  • Retrieve the Service Manual: Found inside the top left corner of the machine, sealed in a plastic bag
    • Accessing the Manual: Remove two screws at the back, disengage the wiring harness and pressure hooks cover, slide the top forward 2 inches, lift, and wiggle free

Diagnostic Mode

  • Entering Diagnostic Mode
    • Plug in the machine and ensure it is in standby mode (all LEDs off)
    • Hold the start button to turn off illuminated lights
    • Turn the cycle selection dial counterclockwise to 12 o'clock
    • Turn the dial clockwise 3 clicks (3 o'clock), counterclockwise 1 click (2 o'clock), then clockwise 1 click (3 o'clock)
    • If done correctly, all LEDs except the lid lock will flash
    • Adjust the click speed if necessary

Manual Test Mode

  1. Testing the Lid Lock
  • Press the start button and check if the lid locks and red LED illuminates
    • If it fails, replace the lid lock
  1. Testing the Cold Water Valve
  • Turn dial clockwise 1 click (done LED illuminates), press start button, check for steady cold water flow
    • If water flow is inadequate, clean or replace the valve
  1. Testing the Hot Water Valve
  • Turn dial clockwise 1 click (spin light illuminates), press start button, check for steady hot water flow
    • If water flow is inadequate, replace the valve
  1. Testing the Drain Pump
  • Turn dial clockwise 5 clicks (rinse, spin, and done lights illuminate), press start button to activate the drain pump
    • If pump fails, investigate and possibly replace

Testing Spin and Agitate Functions

  • Low Spin Mode

    • Turn dial counterclockwise until all LEDs off, press start button to lock lid, turn dial clockwise to wash/spin/done lights
    • Press start to check low spin
    • If test fails, check shift actuator or splutch mechanism
  • Agitation Test

    • Ensure basket has stopped spinning, turn dial clockwise to wash/spin/done lights, press start
    • Check for agitation mode function; agitator and tub should move independently
    • If failed, inspect splutch and actuator

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Control Board Problems
    • Symptoms: washer stops mid-cycle, doesn't advance, reopens water valves post-cycle
    • Solution: Replace the control board (consider cost vs. machine value)
