INGREZZA (Valbenazine) Capsules

Overview

INGREZZA (valbenazine) capsules are approved for the treatment of:

  • Tardive dyskinesia (TD) in adults.
  • Chorea associated with Huntington's disease (HD) in adults.

  • Various financial programs are available to assist patients in obtaining prescriptions for INGREZZA.

Approved Uses

  • INGREZZA and INGREZZA SPRINKLE are used to treat involuntary movements:
    • Tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled movements of face, tongue, or other body parts).
    • Chorea of Huntington's disease.
  • Note: INGREZZA does not cure the underlying causes of these conditions and it is not established if it's safe for children.

Important Safety Information

Serious Side Effects

  1. Depression and Suicidal Thoughts:
    • Particularly in patients with Huntington's disease.
    • Monitor any changes in mood, behavior, or thoughts.
    • Seek immediate medical help if symptoms worsen.
  2. Allergic Reactions:
    • Symptoms: breathing difficulties, swelling, hives.
    • Immediate ER visit recommended if symptoms appear.
  3. Somnolence and Sedation:
    • Avoid driving or operating machinery until effects are known.
    • Alcohol can exacerbate drowsiness.
  4. Heart Rhythm Problems (QT Prolongation):
    • Symptoms: irregular heartbeat, dizziness, fainting.
    • Inform healthcare provider if symptoms arise.
  5. Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS):
    • Symptoms: high fever, muscle stiffness, erratic pulse.
    • Requires immediate medical attention.
  6. Parkinson-like Symptoms:
    • Symptoms: stiffness, tremors, balance issues.
    • Report symptoms to healthcare provider.

Precautions

  • Inform healthcare provider of any liver or heart issues, pregnancy, or breastfeeding plans.
  • Disclose all medications being taken, including prescription, OTC, vitamins, and supplements.
  • Avoid concurrent use of MAOIs or have a gap of at least 14 days.

Side Effects

  • Common in TD patients: sleepiness, tiredness.
  • Common in HD patients: sleepiness, hives, insomnia.
  • Report side effects to the FDA or consult a doctor for advice.
