Uses of Present Simple Tense

1. Facts, Truths, and Generalizations

  • Used to express facts and truths that don't change.
  • Examples:
    • The Sun is bright. (Fact)
    • Pigs don't fly. (Fact)
    • Cats are better than dogs. (Generalization)
    • It's cold in winter. (Truth for many people)

2. Habits and Routines

  • Used for actions that happen regularly.
  • Examples:
    • I always eat lunch at noon.

    • You play games every day.

    • Seth starts work at 9:00 a.m. daily.

      • Note: Add ‘s’ or ‘es’ for he/she/it subjects (e.g., Seth starts).
    • They study English every Monday.

3. Non-Continuous Verbs (Stative Verbs)

  • Used for verbs that express thoughts, feelings, and senses.
  • Examples:
    • I love my mom.
    • It smells good.
    • Kelly feels happy.
    • They need help.

4. Near Future Events

  • Present simple can indicate something happening soon.
  • Examples:
    • I have class at 6 p.m.
    • Lisa arrives on Sunday.
    • We start work soon.
    • My students come tomorrow.

5. Negative Forms

  • Negative usage with ‘do not’ and ‘does not’.
  • Examples:
    • Mike eats bread. -> Mike doesn’t eat bread.
    • You swim well. -> You don’t swim well.

6. Question Forms

  • Forming questions with ‘do’ or ‘does’.
  • Examples:
    • They live here. -> Do they live here?
    • He plays soccer. -> Does he play soccer?
