COPD Classification

  • Stages:
    • Stage 1 to Stage 4
    • Stage 4 is the most severe
  • Diagnosis Tool:
    • Spirometry results are crucial for diagnosis

New 2023 Group Classifications

  • Old Groups: A, B, C, D
  • New Groups: A, B, E
    • Group A: Mild symptoms
    • Group B: More symptoms than A
    • Group E (formerly C and D):
      • Stage 3 and 4 severity
      • At least two flare-ups in the past year
      • At least one hospitalization due to COPD

Data for COPD Treatment Decision

  • CAT Score:
    • An 8-item questionnaire assessing health status in COPD patients
  • Recurrent Hospitalizations:
    • Number of hospitalizations due to COPD

Treatment Approach

  • COPD vs Asthma:
    • COPD does not use the Step Up treatment approach as in asthma
