Overview
This transcript provides step-by-step instructions on reconstituting injectable medications that arrive as dry powder, such as HCG, Epimorlin, or Sermorelin, using bacteriostatic water.
Supplies and Preparation
- Gather dry powder medication vial, bacteriostatic water vial, and a large syringe with needle.
- Pop off protective tops from both vials to access the rubber stoppers.
- Clean rubber stoppers of both vials with alcohol prior to use to maintain sterility.
Drawing and Mixing the Solution
- Refer to medication instructions for required volume of bacteriostatic water (example: 5 mL).
- Draw the syringe back to the 5 mL mark with air before inserting it into the bacteriostatic water vial.
- Inject air into the water vial to create a vacuum, which eases withdrawal of the liquid.
- Invert the vial and withdraw 5 mL of bacteriostatic water into the syringe, ensuring no air remains.
Reconstitution of Medication
- Insert the syringe needle into the dry powder vial and inject the bacteriostatic water.
- Expect some resistance as the solution enters the vial; keep your finger on the plunger while removing the needle to prevent backflow.
- Cap the needle after use for safety.
Storage Instructions
- Store the reconstituted medication in the refrigerator until ready for use.
