Pyramus and Thisbe, a pair of ill-fated lovers from Greek mythology, whose story inspired Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. This couple suffer from an incredible run of bad luck that tests their fledgling relationship to breaking point. But do they end up happy and together in the end? Let's find out together, right now.
Pyramus and the beautiful Thisbe are two lovers living in the city of Babylon. Despite their mutual attraction, They are forbidden to wed by their parents due to an ongoing family rivalry. It just so happens, however, that they are neighbours and live in connected houses. Through a crack in one of the walls, they are able to communicate and spend many hours whispering of their love for one another. Unable to contain their desire any longer, they determine to defy their parents'rule and meet in secret.
Through their hushed conversations in the wall. They arrange to meet near the tomb of Nihus, under a mulberry tree, when they can finally declare their love eye to eye. Thisbe arrives first, but instead of finding her lover, she is confronted by a lioness with a mouth bloody from a recent kill.
Terrified, she flees from the scene and in a rush, leaves behind her cloak. When Pyramus arrives a few moments later, he is horrified to discover the cloak of Thisbe. Now torn and spotted with blood by the departed lioness, he assumes that a wild beast must have killed his love.
And this is actually a great lesson to never assume, as rather than trying to gather any more information, or questioning where the body was, he immediately kills himself, overcome with grief. As he dies, his blood splashes onto the white mulberry leaves, staining them dark red. After a while, and recovered from her scare, Thisbe returns, hoping to now find Pyramus waiting for her, but instead discovers his dead body, stabbed with his own sword. It is now her turn to be overcome, and after a moment of mourning, she takes the same sword from her lover and ends her own life.
It is said that the gods took note of the lament of Thisbe, and forever changed the colour of mulberry fruits to a stained dark red colour. Honor of their forbidden love. A short story from Greek mythology but a fascinating one.
You could take from it a lesson of faithfulness and devotion until the very end. Alternatively, it may serve as a reminder to never jump to conclusions too quickly. Either way, I hope you enjoyed it.
