[Music] book 11 provides a really interesting cross-section of the past the present and the future to come Odysseus arrives in the land of the dead he encounters Alpen or his dead soldier he encounters his mother who didn't know died and he meets up with Tiresias Tiresias gives him some advice he tells him to tell his crew never to eat the cattle of Helios he also tells him that he will make it home it's possible but that he needs to be very very careful and he needs to make sure he leaves a decent sacrifice for Poseidon this is where Odysseus is storytelling ends and he's back in the present with King Alcinous and queen irritating and he asked them once more can they please help him get home and they agree but only if he tells them more about the land of the dead the land of the dead is representative of a very important symbolic motion that Odysseus has to go through living up to his responsibilities challenging his ability to own and know his own future and presenting a tremendous physical and mental task that we see come up in a lot of hero's quests after this one Odysseus recounts his meeting with Ajax and Hercules and Achilles other legendary heroes and he also talks about his meeting with Agamemnon who says that his betrayal at the hands of his wife Clytemnestra represents a betrayal by all women and that he needs to be skeptical of Penelope and very careful as he returns home to her this is some major foreshadowing about his relationship and it explains some of his deceptive behavior as he hides his motives intention and identity from his own family upon making at home [Music]
