Overview
This lecture introduces the basics of CAD (Computer-Aided Design), AutoCAD software requirements, the file management process, and important guidelines for saving your work.
Introduction to CAD and AutoCAD
- CAD stands for Computer-Aided Design, which uses computers to assist in design creation or modification.
- AutoCAD is a widely-used CAD software in the design industry.
- Do not confuse AutoCAD with other CAD software like Revit; they serve different purposes.
AutoCAD Software Requirements
- The required software version for the course is AutoCAD 2021; versions back to 2017 are acceptable but not recommended.
- The Windows (PC) version of AutoCAD is required for this course due to differences in commands and interface with the Mac version.
Starting a Project in AutoCAD
- After installing AutoCAD, open it by double-clicking the "big red A" desktop icon.
- To start a new project, click the big A at the top left, select "New," and choose the "acad" template (.dwt file).
- After opening the template, save the file using "Save As," rename it with your initials, and select a storage location.
- Once saved, the file becomes a .dwg file, which is the standard AutoCAD drawing file.
Best Practices for Saving Files
- Save your work frequently using the Save button, Save option in the big A menu, or Ctrl+S shortcut.
- Regularly use "Save As" with the date appended to archive different versions of your file.
- Save files to a cloud service (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox) to prevent data loss from computer failure.
- Upload your AutoCAD file with assignment submissions as an extra backup, although instructors will not review these files.
Key Terms & Definitions
- CAD — Computer-Aided Design, the use of computers for designing and modifying digital drawings.
- AutoCAD — A specific software application for CAD.
- .dwt file — AutoCAD template file for starting new projects.
- .dwg file — The standard AutoCAD drawing file format used to save your work.
Action Items / Next Steps
- Download and install AutoCAD 2021 for Windows if not already done.
- Begin your first drawing following the steps outlined in class.
- Set up a cloud storage solution for backing up all AutoCAD files.
- Review the installation how-to in the course references.
