e [Music] hello oh hello hello good afternoon can you hear and see me well yes that's good to know how are you this afternoon this afternoon uhuh I'm fine you're fine do you have any plans for today since it's uh early in the afternoon oh no no and then I think from what I can remember in your country um it's the second month of um the year right so it is still winter season how cold is it in your place right now how cold m is it very cold yes it's raining right now oh I cannot imagine how cold that one is in my country it rains but the good thing is we don't have winter season so it's just like normal or regular rainy season so it's not that cold but when you go out um I don't like it when the road is wet because you know your shoes might get dirty your pants something like that so anyway it's still a good thing okay and then it's good to see you again in class um I think your last class was oh our last class together by the way rather was in January oh were you were you very busy oh yes I had a a time job [Music] ah and if I remember correctly you're still a student right yes oh and then um from what I know other people they went back to school already how about you when are you going back to school and this weekend Oh Sunday on Sunday so you have a few more days to enjoy your rest days or your vacation but so far did you enjoy your winter vacation oh yes oh what did you do I go outside with my [Music] friend we go we go picnic and and we go to the we went to CH oh we went to CH even though it's winter season it's also good or it's also it's still okay to have a picnic because you know it's very C most of the time I think the season for picnic is winter Autumn or summer right but winter is also okay okay and you also went to tan you you traveled a little so in tin what tourist spots or tourist area did you visit um I go to I went to oh I went to uh that's that's a what's that in English is it a okay is Lantern Festival it's in thaan yes there there there has a firewor display that's really nice yeah I saw that on the internet where you will like light the Lantern and throw it up so that it's inan oh that's really nice and in my country I think from what I know we don't have that one what do you think is the reason why people celebrate Lantern Festival I don't know but you like to um celebrate that one yeah oh is it expensive to do that activity like to uh is it expensive to maybe you have to buy the lantern right no we we went to there and the the temple there has a Firework and we we just ah you did not drive there ah you did not what this one did you did not do the flying of lantern you only went there to watch the the fireworks display oh is is it near to your place or do you have to travel for some time to go to Tin uh we drive about one hour so it's that's not very far and what is the most convenient transportation from your place to CH is it mrrt bus or a scooter [Music] um you said I I how I go to how I want to uh we drive by car yes Ah that's really nice because if you want to uh stop at some place that is beautiful you can stop at any time yes that's really good congratulations for spending your winter vacation well okay so for this afternoon we will continue with your lesson and you you have here survival English okay so we will continue with where you left off with lesson one so we have here all right so if you can remember um during your um previous lesson you finished questions for your taxi driver so now we will continue with uh what expressions or phrases you can say when leaving the cab so meaning you already arrived at your destination or your place so you can say these uh phrases or sentences to your taxi driver so we have four examples let's read them all the change and may I have may I have a receive please and uh thanks for the ride m and enjoy the rest of your day okay and how about you personally do you like uh using the taxi when you go somewhere yes oh how often how often uhuh uh one once a week once a week okay why so and so far from your experience what do you usually say to the driver when you are leaving the cab or the taxi uh when I when I go when I get in the car and I I tell the taxi where I'm going and then when you arrive at your destination what will you you say to the driver what do you usually say I usually say I usually say thank you thank you okay and I think we have this one right here okay and may I ask why do you usually take the taxi once or twice a week uh because I'm a school and I I want to go go to the the uh train station ah so before getting to your train station you have to use the taxi instead and from what you have observed is it expensive to use the taxi in your country or just affordable uh I think is expensive oh so um how about in your case because you have to get to the train station right so aside from Taxi can you use other sort of Transportation because he said it's somehow expensive to use the taxi so twice for example you you use the taxi twice a week oh so that that's a lot of money yes so instead of Taxi what what other Transportation can you use um I can take a bus mm-m but it takes time yes that is why you prefer to use the taxi instead ah why um how many minutes does it take from your place to the MRT station is it far uh it's about 20 to 30 minutes ah a little far so if you are going to use other public transportations it'll take longer than that yes because it has to have stops right especially the bus oh stop here then on the next um like area it um it will also stop maybe there will be someone who will get on or someone will get off that is why okay but other people I remembered they have scooters they can use it how about you do you know how to ride a scooter oh yes oh but you don't usually use it when you go to the MRT um yes why why because it's is more dangerous ah to use the scooter yes oh okay so when do you usually use scooter to go somewhere [Music] um when do I usually do m in when I in y because there's no there yes ah you're afraid to use the scooter on the highway or the main road because there are many scars cars rather other scooters and big buses yes Ah that's okay it's better to be safe than sorry okay thank you so much for explaining very well now that we are finished here where what to say when leaving the cab let us continue with oh so this part we are now going to have your activities so the activities are related to the Expressions that you learned in the previous slides let's start with activity a so what you are going to do a based on what you learned in this lesson give expressions for the following situation and by the way it's okay if you cannot remember them word word by word you can you use your own ideas too if you can now let's have number one you are talking to a taxi dispatch operator and wanted to ask if there is a fixed fee from your location to your destination so what will you say [Music] it's like you are in yeah it's like you are inquiring in inquiring mean meaning you are you are looking for specific information from someone something like that [Music] what will you say so you can use your own expression or your own explanation I Ah that's all right we can maybe take a look at or have a short review with the expressions and after we can go to your activities okay so let's let's have our refresher first so let me check we start with out this one okay so first the situation is you are asking someone to call you a taxi so we have these two so you can say would you would you call me a taxi please I'm going to let's say tyan for example and then can you give me the number for a tax Tax Service so these are some examples if you want someone to call you a taxi now for the second situation uh this time you are calling a taxi yourself and then for this time while calling for a taxi you ask the taxi dispatch operator on the phone so let's say for example the company Circle taxi so this one will ask where are you located and you can say your address and where you are going so next let's have this one while you are calling you can also inquire or ask questions towards the taxi dispatch operator so you can have can I schedule a taxi for pick up 400 a.m. tomorrow or is there a flat rate to the airport from here what will it cost me to go from my hotel to the airport how long is to wait for a taxi right now and when is the soonest I could book a taxi for so these are like questions that you can ask to the operator okay and by the way I think I've asked this one to one of my students in your country why what kind of Taxi is more is commonly used uh Uber Uber oh um if we are to compare Uber with our regular taxi which one is much more expensive regular taxi or Uber uh maybe Uber Uber is expensive but it's safer compared to Reg taxi um or easier easier yes ah easier to use okay can take whenever you want yes because you are just going to use your phone to book for an Uber right yes okay that's really nice so those are the questions next part we have our flagging down or hailing down the taxi by the way this is for IR regular taxes because for Uber you don't you don't have to do it something like this because you will just book using your phone but how about you let's say for example it's it's the peak hour so Uber is very busy and you cannot book or your uride so have you ever tried flagging or hailing down a taxi before uh no no you usually use Uber yes ah I'm not sure if it's the same in your country but in my country if it's rainy or let's say for example now it's no longer raining but earlier before that it rained so what usually happens is that when we book Uber or motorcycle taxi no one will pick us up I don't know why how about in your country is it the same or is it okay is okay wow in our case oh let me just take another public transportation because if I will wait it will take some time maybe I will I will go home very late already yeah it's I don't know why do you do that they're very unfair okay so thank you for your for sharing your answer here now uh this time when you are already in the taxi you are now with your taxi driver or cab so these are exle questions that the taxi driver can ask to you so of course he or she will ask um about your location or destination then ask about how you will be paying so either uh any of these um options here in your country when you use Uber what is the usual mode of payment is it cash credit card credit card credit card okay now the driver can also confirm if you want a flat fee do you do you remember a flat fee flat feed uhuh uh yes all right yeah that's okay and then um the driver can also ask if you want a receipt in my country yeah in my country I can't remember experiencing if they have a receipt when you use the Uber or even the regular taxi how about in your country can you ask for a receipt or not really no no because I think it will just show because when you get on the taxi it will show like oh how much you're going to pay right oh yeah okay and I think so far my follow-up question is in my country we aside from flat fee we also have what we call parting rate you know when you get on the taxi and there's already uh like a price there so in my country because we we use the currency Peso so it it starts with 40 pesos how about in your country how much does it start um at oh that's that's a lot at and TD yes Ah that's a little expensive okay very well thank you so much now let's continue with another situation so this time the situation is you are telling the driver your destination so either you have you are going to the airport or I'm going to a motel um a or a street here so it depends but in your case you usually go to the train station uh yes okay in that way it's very convenient now um oh um the the these questions are questions you can ask to your taxi driver so we have here if you want to make a quick stop if you if you are a foreigner can ask for exchange rate for a flat fee or you can confirm whether the driver accepts debit or credit and then you can ask the total cost of your um travel okay and in your experience because you said most of the time you usually go to the train station or MRT station right have you ever tried making a quick stuff while you are in your taxi or cab like maybe want to buy something from a store uh no no you usually go directly to your destination ah okay and I'm not sure but from what I know the country Taiwan is just small right but when you use taxi is it very traffic or is the traffic okay um is traffic okay yes it's bearable beable uh beable be beable be beable beable so meaning it's okay oh it's not that long it's not that short it's all right but how about during Peak hours like you know when people go to work like 8:00 a.m. and then when people go home like 5:00 p.m. oh yes is it traffic yes that's oh how bad the traffic is how B how how B uhuh like this traffic takes one hour or more than 1 hour um no no maybe a few minutes yes oh that's good because if it takes an hour like oh maybe we will just walk to go home okay now we are done here let's continue with oh so this is what we had earlier so now that we are finished reviewing some Expressions we can go and continue with your activ ities so let's start with the first one again you are talking to a taxi dispatch operator and you wanted to ask if there is a fixed fee or a flat fee from your location to your destination so what will you say uh uh do you have a fluffy okay to blank your destination all right how about you have you ever used a fixed grate or a flat fee when going to the MRT before uh no not really okay but since you are still a student right does the taxi driver provide a discount to students um um near the near the school ah if you are near the school uh yes oh but if you go somewhere away from the school so that the the taxi driver will not give any discounts oh really because in my country uh wherever you go as long as you are a student and you have your student identification card with you so they will give you a a student discount even though you are not going to school yeah it's really cool okay so now for the Situation Number Two you want to go to typ a 101 so what will you say to your driver um can you take me to typing 101 that's correct next you are now going to pay so you want to confirm if your driver uh accepts debit card so what will you say uh do you accept accept and deit debit card debit cards correct now um You are going home you are inside the taxi already but you want to pick something up on your way to your destination so what will you say to the driver um uh could could you my making a quick stop that's correct okay and by the way have you ever traveled to another country already uh no not yet I was going to ask if you have been to another country I was going to ask if you also use taxi there okay that's all right but in the future if given the chance would you like to go and visit another country um um paron if given the chance in the future if you have the the money the time or would you like to go and visit another country uh I'd like to go to go to the USA Amer United States that's very far why what would you like to do in the US um uh travel with my friends ah so just traveling vacation yes oh that's really good by the way you also mentioned that earlier for a winter vacation you went for Lantern Festival but in general when you go travel to another place what kind of tourist spots do you like visiting um there are people or Travelers they want to say they want to see nature but there are other people they want to explore the city but how about you what do you [Music] prefer uh I like the people and the weather ler one more time meet people and and and I like the the weather oh that's really nice so you are like culous one you like talking to um new people yes wow that's really good in your country because of course since Taiwan is small there are many tourists too right so how often do you meet new people or maybe tourists T tourists or travelers from another country often sometimes rare not really no not really yeah not really okay that's all right so maybe ah maybe the question is um what do you thing is the city in your country has many tourists um I think Tokyo that's that's a given because Tokyo is the capital city right aside from Tokyo what other city that most tourists would like to visit to you mean in Taiwan or in Taiwan [Music] maybe maybe why what is in Kong does it have a lot of attractive [Music] places or maybe it's convenient it's easy to go there yes it's easy uh okay have you been to kosong before yes ah you stud you study in kosong yes oh us used to okay very well so thank you so much for explaining now we are done with our activity a to continue we have our next bar so here we are going to have our role play activity so our scenario is Imagine first you are waiting for a taxi at the air airport so after a couple of minutes waiting you saw an empty taxi and tried to flag it down so you successfully hailed it so while riding in the taxi you realize you have something to pick up on the way now you can use Expressions you learned in the class so what you are going to do are the following so these are and this is our flow rather so in that case I will be the taxi driver and you are the customer or the tourist okay so uh all right so you are we are now at the airport so I'm coming so my car or my cab is empty so what will how will you flag down a taxi flag down flag flag down or hail H yes because yeah because you haven't experience yet right so in my country aside from like doing like this to call a taxi if the maybe the window is open for the taxi driver we also say taxi like while speaking we also do the action so taxi taxi something like that okay so I will go to your place because you are now my customer okay so um now that I am here you are going h i i I am going to ask where to so you will reply I'm going to oh I'm going to the the MRT Station okay so let's write MRT Station oh okay so in that case we are going to to have a small talk first so uh maybe the the taxi driver can open up about the weather oh today's very hot isn't it um yes and by the way I can see that you have a lot of luggage with you did you go to another country for a vacation um yes I am ready to go to the m that's really cool what country did you visit um I am going to Japan Japan that's a really nice country okay now you remembered that you have to make a quick stop so what will you say to the taxi driver uh could you making a quick stop sure where do you want to stop uh I want to stop at [Music] um uh at a a restaurant restaurant oh sure no problem so okay we are now at the restaurant making a quick stop so now that you are finished so we are now continuing with our journey and then now that you are almost um like at your destination so you will ask the driver um like how will you pay so you will ask um you can first ask do you [Music] accept do you AC do I accept cash debit cards credit [Music] cards uh uh how would you no how would you be paid How would would you like to pay that to me okay maybe I will ask okay so I will say um we are almost at your destination how would you like to pay uh um a credit card M okay good that's good we accept debit card here okay so you can ask how much how much you can continue how much do I owe you how much do I owe you okay let me see what how how much do you usually pay from your place to the mrd station uh it's about 200,000 oh okay so let's use that one oh it's only 200 um NTD so okay you will say here you go so I have the money already the payment so you are now going to leave the taxi or the cab politely so what can you say to the taxi driver uh thank you for driving ride thank you for the ride R and I will say um you're welcome have a safe trip okay very well and by the way I'm not so sure what's your culture in the country but in my country it depends sometimes there are the very talkative taxi drivers but sometimes there are also like silent taxi drivers if if you want to ask them something they will answer and but if you will not ask so they will just keep quiet so how about in your country are the taxi drivers mostly very talkative or does it also depend on the customer um most of D are talk with the taxi driver most of the test driver in the one is [Music] uh one more time uh are they talkative or not talkative talkative oh okay that's really good and by the way um not all but I notice some taxi drivers in my country when they are like on the way to the destination they sometimes turn on the music is it also the same in your country yes oh that's really cool and so far how many types of taxis do you have in the country from what I can remember in my country we have yellow taxi for the airport so you cannot see uh other yellow taxis in other areas so oh it's only in the airport yellow then we have the white taxis that's the regular and for Uber it can be different right they can use their own car something like that but we also have black Taxi I think they are bigger uh well how about in your country how many colors of taxis do you have um and is most be yellow yellow yes like for Uber and regular taxi a regular taxi regular taxi is yellow for Uber Uber is so many col they they use their own car Ah that's really nice oh yeah I like that one in your experience what do you think is the most beautiful uh Uber car have you how do you call this one have you used as Transportation um blue blue yes oh that's really nice maybe that's one reason why it's expens it it is expensive because they are using their own car instead of the regular taxi right but um personally I prefer Uber when they use their own car because you know they don't like they like to keep their cars clean so when you get in It's Like H it's so um how you call this one it's not smelly it it smells really good but when you use a taxi like it has like oh it has a smell like a taxi smell yeah something like that okay and um so far you can use taxi when you only need to go to like a certain destination not far not very near too but what if you are going somewhere far what kind of Transportation do you like to use in that case I like to use the how about the bus when can you use the bus um uh when I not in go I use the boss Tha because the is is just in G Tha and taipe ah not every city in your country has the MRT H yes Ah that's that's cool yeah and so far from your experience experience how long have you uh what's the longest time you have traveled using the MRT like how many hours how many uh one hours one hour only H do one hour more than one hour something like that in your country because for in in my city especially in my city we don't have an MRT station but uh not the station but the train too but in our capital city in Manila because we are in SIU so in Manila they have the train and the MRT station but in our city know so in your country um from if we compare it to another country right like Japan they all they have regular train or normal train and they also have like the fast trrain yeah in your country do you have that or do you only have the normal train uh we have we had a faster train oh and is it expensive too uh yes ah have you tried using it uh yes when I um when I go home I I just start at goong and I I went to Yi and how many minutes did it take minutes uh not minutes the the faster like about 1 hour and one and 1 hour and like a few minutes I no that's 30 minutes oh 1 hour and 30 minutes so it's like um almost two hours but I think if you compare that in my city to be specific it's better because um my city is not very big it's it's actually smaller than your country but when we go either to the North or to the South we don't have imagine don't have a train right so we only have buses so when you would take buses it takes like 4 hours or more to go somewhere yeah it's so tiring and of course um you know buses if someone will get off at this bus stop so that the bus will stop so at another stop it will stop again so probably your four hours will become five yeah it's really inconvenient yet have you traveled that long in your country or not yet maybe not the train maybe using a private car yes I I used to start at go and I went to taipe by oh by the way I know taipe is it's northern part right where is goong located is South South oh so like opposite points so North here and South here oh how many hours did it take to go to taipe it's about four four hours four hours do you have to get off and uh transfer to another MRT or is it like straight 4 hours is straight straight and did of by 4 hours did you use the fast training or the regular train oh is uh it has a high speed rail ah so it's it's fast but it takes four hours oh no less I I take the trend is take about four hours hper is maybe to um I don't know because it's expensive ah okay you haven't try that one no I haven't ah okay maybe for a student it's expensive of course because you are not earning your money yet but maybe in the future when you start working so you can try the things that you haven't tried before Oh So anyway if you can try something in the future when you have your work already what maybe what is the number one thing that you would like to try uh travel to another country or travel the whole Taiwan um maybe go to the other other country go to other country and your uh yeah I asked earlier your number one country is the USA what about number two number two is uh Korean or Kore oh it's near so that's okay number three your third on the list is Japan Japan oh so us Korea and Japan oh okay why what what's your motivation for wanting to visit the USA because it's very far right yes uhuh like what what influen you to go to to want to go to the US because I I used to know about the American from TV shows ah you want to go there and see it for yourself and experience their culture oh okay and if I remember correctly you're actually going for a summer work and travel program in the future uh yes oh is it is it going to be this year or next year this year this year oh what's your target what's that place U migan migan oh New York oh that's good because if you want because after working you can go and travel right so if you are finished you can just go here to New York because it's near to migan oh that's really cool um so you are going to go this year when will your interview be is it near it's you what month is it going to be uh end of June ah you still have some time to prepare and then after the interview what what month will you go to the US oh the the interview is uh was and one more time the interview interview is is already finished finished yes so this coming June we are already going to work in the US wow congratulations so what you're going to do is to continue your studies and then do during because it's summer right so during summer you're going to fly to another country wow so that's really good good so you still have a few months to prepare for your um Journey so you can enjoy there okay very well so far that actually ends our lesson for this afternoon and from what I can see you did really well because you used the English language and answering the questions provided supporting details and if I ask you followup questions you did not hesitate to discuss your answers too so so far we don't have any mispronounced words here so just keep on practicing so that you can get used to speaking English when you go to the US okay all right so so far do you have any questions or clarifications for me uh no thank you so much and have a great afternoon goodbye goodbye
