Fall Protection Standards Update: Self-Retracting Lifelines (SRLs)

Update Overview

  • Fall Protection Standards Change: Recent updates to standards impacting self-retracting lifelines (SRLs).
  • Mandatory Updates?
    • Short Answer: No mandatory update required for existing SRLs.
    • Long Answer: Depends on jurisdiction and specific requirements (e.g., US Army Corps of Engineers EM385 might require updates).
    • OSHA Compliance: Current equipment can continue if it passes inspection and meets manufacturer's instructions.

Arresting Distances

  • Previous (2014 Standard):
    • Class A: 24 inches
    • Class B: 54 inches
  • Updated (2021 Standard):
    • Class 1 & 2: 42 inches

User Weight Capacity

  • No Change:
    • Equipment testing ranges from 130 lbs to 310 lbs.

Qualification Testing Mass

  • Increased Test Mass:
    • Previous: 282 lbs
    • New: 310 lbs
    • Aligns with maximum weight capacity, eliminating gray areas.

Labeling Requirements

  • New Requirements:
    • Class labels must be attached to the product.
    • Fall Clearance Indicator Tables: Must be at or near the harness attachment point for easier access.

SRL Classifications

  • 2014: Class A and Class B
  • 2021 Update:
    • Three Main Types:
      • Standard SRLs (anchored to structure)
      • SRL-Ps (personal use, attached to harness)
      • SRL-Rs (rescue and retrieval)
    • Classes:
      • Class 1: For anchors at or above shoulder height.
      • Class 2: For anchors at or above shoulder height, down to foot level; includes 2014 Leading Edge standard.

Distribution and Sales

  • Existing Stock (Post-August 1, 2023):
    • Distributors can sell existing 2014 standard SRLs.
    • Manufacturers must meet new 2021 standards for any claims.

Anchorage Compliance

  • Compatibility with New SRLs:
    • Increased arresting forces mean existing anchors must be validated.
    • Example: If maximum arresting force increases, anchor requirements increase (e.g., 1350 lbs to 1800 lbs).
    • Review Needed: Confined space equipment, tripods, davit arms, engineered rooftop anchor points, horizontal lifelines.

Key Considerations

  • Understand Equipment Capabilities and Limitations:
    • Ensuring compliance with updated standards, especially for arresting forces and anchorage strength.
