Nov 19, 2024

Notes on Chapter 6C - MUTCD 2009 Edition

Section 6C.01 Temporary Traffic Control Plans

  • Purpose of TTC Plans: Facilitate road users through work zones or incident areas, ensuring continuity of road user flow.
  • Scope: From detailed plans to references in standard drawings.
  • Preparation: Should be done by knowledgeable individuals; based on engineering judgment.
  • Coordination: Necessary between adjacent projects to prevent duplicate signage.
  • Accessibility: Must include provisions for accessible paths for pedestrians and transit services.
  • Modifications: Allowed for better safety/effectiveness, with agency approval.

Section 6C.02 Temporary Traffic Control Zones

  • Definition: Area of highway with altered conditions due to work, incidents, or events.
  • Components:
    • Work Zone: Marked by signs, barriers, etc.
    • Incident Zone: Temporary controls in response to incidents.
    • Planned Events: Traffic patterns altered for event management.

Section 6C.03 Components of Temporary Traffic Control Zones

  • Division into Areas:
    • Advance Warning Area
    • Transition Area
    • Activity Area
    • Termination Area

Section 6C.04 Advance Warning Area

  • Purpose: Inform users of upcoming work zones or incidents.
  • Sign Placement: Varies based on road type and speed limits.
  • Table 6C-1: Outlines recommended spacing for warning signs.

Section 6C.05 Transition Area

  • Purpose: Redirect users from their normal path using tapers or vehicle-mounted devices.

Section 6C.06 Activity Area

  • Purpose: Area where work occurs, including work, traffic, and buffer spaces.
  • Buffer Spaces: Should not be used for work or storage.

Section 6C.07 Termination Area

  • Purpose: Return users to their normal path. May use END ROAD WORK signs or speed limit signs.

Section 6C.08 Tapers

  • Usage: In transition and termination areas, lengths depend on various factors.
  • Taper Length Criteria: Provided in Tables 6C-3 and 6C-4.

Section 6C.09 Detours and Diversions

  • Detours: Reroute users onto existing highways.
  • Diversions: Reroute users onto temporary highways.

Section 6C.10 - 6C.15 One-Lane, Two-Way Traffic Control Methods

  • Flagger Method: Typically used with flaggers at each end.
  • Flag Transfer Method: Uses a flag or token to control traffic.
  • Pilot Car Method: Guides traffic via a car.
  • Traffic Control Signal Method: Uses signals to manage flow.
  • Stop/Yield Control Method: For low-volume roads with good visibility.

Summary:

  • Key Considerations: Safety, accessibility, and efficient traffic management in TTC zones.
  • Engineering Judgement: Essential for planning and implementing TTC measures.
