Essay Writing: Conclusion Paragraph

Overview

  • This is part three of a four-part series on essay writing.
  • Focus on crafting the conclusion paragraph.

Key Elements of a Conclusion Paragraph

  1. Review the Thesis Statement

    • Use the first sentence to review the main idea of the thesis.
    • Avoid repeating the same words; paraphrase instead.
  2. Review Body Paragraphs

    • Use the middle sentences to summarize the topic sentences of the body paragraphs.
    • Slightly alter the wording from the body paragraphs.
  3. Provide a Result, Consequence, or Recommendation

    • The final sentence should reflect a result, consequence, or recommendation tied to the thesis.
    • It should synthesize all discussed ideas into a cohesive conclusion.

Example Structure

  • First Sentence: Reviews thesis

    • "Walking is an ideal exercise."
    • Reflects the thesis: "The best type of exercise is walking."
  • Second Sentence: Recalls first body paragraph's idea

    • "It is easier than many other sports."
    • Reflects that walking is easy.
  • Third Sentence: Recalls second body paragraph's idea

    • "It is also more convenient than many other activities."
    • Reflects that walking is convenient.
  • Fourth Sentence: Recalls third body paragraph's idea

    • "Walking is usually done outside which helps people feel happy and less stressed."
    • Reflects the benefits of walking outside.
  • Final Sentence: Offers a recommendation

    • "Everyone who wants regular exercise should try walking."
    • Synthesizes all key ideas without repetition.
