What is Caption Text?
- A brief description that identifies or introduces a document, graphic, or photo.
- Additional information usually located below the image.
Function of Caption Text
- To help the reader/viewer understand more information not available in the photo or video.
Types of Caption Text
- Identification
- Describes who is in the picture if only one person is shown.
- Example: “Eren Laurie, a student of the University.”
- Cutline
- Describes who is in the picture and what they are doing.
- Keywords: Who and What.
- Example: “Eren Laurie, a student of the university, poses in front of her college.”
- Summary
- Provides a complete description answering the 5Ws (Who, What, When, Where, Why).
- Example: “Indian workers were cleaning machines on November 9, 2018, during an event to celebrate Diwali.”
- Expanded
- A more complete form of Summary including the 5Ws and How it happened.
- Includes quotations.
- Example: Full detailed description with a quote at the end.
- Group Identification
- Used when the image contains more than one person.
- Example: “Belgian Royal couple King Felipe and Queen Mathilde pose in front of the Taj Mahal.”
- Quote
- Contains a quote related to the picture.
- Example: “Sometimes life is going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith.” - Steve Jobs
How to Write a Caption
- Observe the Picture or Video
- Analyze the image or video you are captioning.
- Find the Message
- Determine the message to be conveyed.
- Write Sentences or Phrases
- Draft sentences or phrases that align with the image.
Language Features in Captions
- Simple Present Tense
- Uses the base form of the verb for verbal sentences and “is/am/are” for nominal sentences.
- Example: “Eren Laurie is at the university.”
- Direct Speech/Quotes
- Uses quotation marks to indicate direct quotes.
- Example: “Eren won the International speech competition,” said Steve Jobs.
