Licensing 101: How to Obtain Your Initial License in California

Overview

  • Architecture is a creative and innovative profession.
  • Path to licensure takes 5-8 years, encompassing education, exams, and applications.
  • A license is required to practice architecture and provide services in the U.S.
  • Each jurisdiction requires a separate license.

Steps to Become a Licensed Architect in California

Step 1: Education

  • Options for Education:
    • Degree from a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited program.
    • Graduate from an Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPA-L) program.
    • Degree from a non-accredited program.
    • Document training or work experience.

Step 2: Establish a Record

  • Establish a record with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).
  • Select California as the jurisdiction for initial licensure.
  • NCARB record: verified account of professional history, partially demonstrating qualifications.

Step 3: Apply with the Board

  • Apply with the California Architects Board (CAB).
  • Submit an application for eligibility evaluation with a processing fee.
  • Applications need an original signature; electronic signatures may be accepted in the future.

Step 4: Pass the Architect Registration Examination (ARE)

  • Pass each ARE division within a five-year rolling clock period.
  • Schedule ARE divisions through NCARB 'My Examination' account.

Step 5: Gain and Document Required Experience

  • All U.S. jurisdictions accept the Architectural Experience Program (AXP).
  • Some jurisdictions may require additional experience.
  • Request NCARB to transmit NCARB record to CAB after ARE completion, including AXP history.

Step 6: Complete the California Supplemental Examination (CSE)

  • Submit CSE application and fee with an original signature to CAB.
  • CSE application is mailed after AXP completion and ARE passing are confirmed through NCARB.
  • Application provided to eligible candidates by CAB.

Step 7: Apply for Licensure

  • Eligible to apply for licensure after passing the CSE.
  • Apply for licensure and pay the required fee.
  • Use the initial license fee calculator for fee estimation.

Step 8: Submit a Set of Fingerprints

  • Required to provide fingerprints via Live Scan or fingerprinting card (out-of-state candidates).
  • Criminal background check conducted by the California Department of Justice and FBI.
  • CAB recommends submitting fingerprints upon first eligibility for the CSE to reduce licensure delay.
