Monster Hunter Wilds Gameplay Features Overview

I don't know who I am I don't know where I am all I know is I must kill I'm sorry I can't get over this bico oh yes hello and welcome my fellow Hunters who's ready for some full Wilds hunt gaml start to finish everything included this is exciting of course today is the start of Gamescom proper everyone's playing the public Wilds demo Capcom themselves have done a few hunts for us and yes we are there as I said earlier we will be getting our own private bit of footage hunting for you guys that will be appearing in the next day or so likely Friday all being well but in the meantime there is still so much to look at so much new information new details mechanical confirmations reveals just it nonstop so what we're going to do is go through the first official hunt we were shown everything in that and there's a lot and then a load of very important new bits of information that you really are going to want to know because a lot of it is absolutely gamechanging to the fabric of monster hunter in the most exciting way so without further ado let's get into this we get a little look at the actual character models the full game will have the normal detailed Creator but just seeing this gives you an example of the level of fidelity we're working with here it's really bloody good so we begin in the village and you can immediately see the various classic stations uh you've got the item shop you've got the blacksmith uh you've got the canteen over there and we have ourselves a hunt for an Alpha dasu Gamma Alma gives us a little introduction our new Handler esque figure and we are off also a huge shout out to the team actually showing us this rioso San and jonno being fantastic as always everyone there it's just always so lovely to see the people behind Monster Hunter being so clearly in love and passionate about you know Monster Hunter it really does give me a lot of Happiness to be part of this community and moments like this really affirm that so it lets us know that we want to use a large dung pod to scatter a herd to peel off your actual intended target which makes a lot of sense and we are ready to set out on our secret and there we are then actually in game properly so we got your large dunk pods we've got the Ling pods and life powders luring pods doing what they say on the tin and an instant little bit of mini map I mean already the just pure like Fidelity of it all it just blows me away every time I see it now there is a lot of UI going on and that's something we'll talk about because it's probably the one thing with the most mixed feelings that I'm seeing so far and I do want to have a little bit of a chat on it but for now we get to go into the tent which means we get to look at equipment which means we get to have a little peep into something like armor skills we get the info on your secondary and Primary Weapons it's literally just an instant Swap and it does take like half a second to swap you call your secret in you swap weapon it's very very smooth so the actual equipment then we have our primary and secondary slot like we just talked about the basic set is the Hope set and you'll see instantly the UI is very worldy right the same sharpness meter the way the attack is displayed and it does look like we are getting true raw displayed instead of a bloated value so we can see more literally how good weapons are compared to each other we don't need to do a little bit of quick math to get there so that's definitely nice and then you may also notice that yes weapons have skills this great sword gives speed sharpening level one so we do have the world's skill system but we actually can build in skills from weapons which is interesting because it means you're secondary weapon will also of course contribute and if the secondary weapon skill is always active then you might end up in a situation where you're just choosing your secondary weapon to add a skill that you want for your primary while never planning to swap to it so I would assume that you don't get an active skill from your secondary weapon unless you're holding it and at that point you lose the skills that your primary has given you kind of like decoration slots in mantles when they're on or off to circumvent that kind of obvious Min maxing that will happen so we get a little cheeky look then at the actual armor going forward we see the bow gun we've got spread we've got Pier we've got your Wy blast all things that we want to see and a little bit of ballistics going on too then the actual armor itself stun resistance normal skills looking good all of the usual reses and everything that but a big deal here and a big reveal and a big confirmation is both male and female hunters can use male and female armor models you don't have to have a specific look depending on the gender of your Hunter which is awesome we get to full minmax and it really is a true evolution of the fashion endgame and something I know cotton is going to be absolutely thrilled about when he finally gets to learn the information we're learning now in like 5 months or so or whenever Wilds actually happens in 2025 oh the poor guy he's suffering not looking at anything on the internet in any case yeah that is a huge step for the Monster Series any armor on any Hunter and it's just a visual choice so we see here then this doshu garama does indeed give us a confirmation of set bonuses being back this one being dasama power we don't know what Powerhouse exactly does but it is nice to know that set bonus out think CU I really do like them it adds a little bit of structure to your set building and doesn't make it a case of just selecting the five individual most Optimum pieces of armor because you might really need a set bonus so you have to use two or four pieces of a well set instead and that's an interesting decision to make but also there's not just specific monster set bonuses there is generic set bonuses I.E set bonuses that you will get by wearing groupings of similar armor the easy example is let's say you wear three pieces of armor that all come from aqua esque monsters you might activate a three set that is aquatic monster bonus Etc so it gives a bit more even more flexibility in that sense so we can really mix and match sets because you might wear a specific monsters piece of armor to get their specific bonus but one might also double up towards a generic set bonus to kind of double dip on what's active which I think is very very cool so our hunter is off on the hunt and thankfully the best weapon has been selected we'll get to see some great sord action the smoothness of just okay we're off now on the hunt we've just got on our secret left the base and here we go and here the secret is automatically traveling to the doag that we can see marked 193 away and we also do get to see the fulgurite crystal which yes is the rock formations I was talking about thanks to our friend ray da and that is lovely but seeing the secret do its acrobatic thing hopping along is great it's very quick it looks very efficient and a really nice form of travel that gets you where you need to be in a visually pleasing way without you having to control it we see the Scout flies highlighting bushes here and you can walk through them which makes me think we do have the Crouch down and you're all hidden and the monster loses track of you has to sniff you out for a little bit which is nice to see and it's time to engage so the ghilly mantle you'll notice hasn't has a big use in Wilds because obviously it guarantees you getting your surprise attack off now I assume dasi gam is going to be one of the earlier hunts we' not seen any other mentals so I do wonder if it's just Gilly for the surprise attack mechanic and other mentals won't be returning as it does look like uh the mentle is like a standard bit of kit here the Ghillie but also it is just a specialized tool which implies it's going to be more than one otherwise why have its own category in any case let's do this thing vigas confirmed returning along with the Vitality plants the various environmental effects to heal you and then we get our pack of dashu Gama the alpha in the middle we get our guaranteed sneak attack for 44 damage it's very much low rank armor and weapons the usual demo as setup that they do and we do get this instant you've started the quest because you've attacked the monster and that's just really lovely smoothness we're getting our actual attack names pop up as well cuz that option is on and the one thing I will say is there is a lot of UI but that's normal for a new monster the game demo that has everything enabled for maximum ease of use for someone who's not played the series perhaps like always you'll be able to toggle on and off what you want and customize it to be more simpler and clean and yes the health bar is this kind of wibbly wobbly almost Resident Evil ask heart monitor now it is still precise it goes down by the chunk you get hit by it heals with your Potions by the amount they heal it's not vague in any way you can still exactly tell where you're at but it is wibbly and as you'll see later on that comes with extra useful info but this is a good time to talk about the fact that a lot of people are very unsure on this and I'm not sure where I stand either it's very visually cool like it looks slick but it is quite bright and moving and if you just kind of stare at the center of the screen on this awesome bit of mountain hunting it does draw your eye quite a lot doesn't it like it's very attention grabby so I do wonder if there'll be an option to make it more plain and just still I think that would be definitely a good call I personally don't mind it but I can totally see where people are coming from that think it's a bit distractingly much so you'll have to say your own thoughts on that down below so yes we are chasing the pack of dashu Gama they immediately ran off swapping to a little bit of B gun peppering them with shots which is awesome and then we get out to the big open plane and immediately see a hood of herbivore in the background just the pure spectacle of everything is so so wonderful so we leap off to our mounting attack and hunting is a go and then here we get to see great sword being the best weapon in the gam this is one of great swords new moves from the focus stance you start charging and and it's the charge Rising slash if you time it with the Monster boom a clash of Sparks and you send them reeling and then you launch out your Slinger hook as you can see there the white highlighted line attached run forward and then do this slam down sadly it missed but it's just perfect we have skill activation messages back which is a little bit of a shame because it can get quite obnoxious with ones that activate constantly so I'm really am hoping we can disable that this time around like we have in RIS and sunbreak I prefer just the visual tell of what your skills were doing so that is certainly something to note but immediately you can just kind of see everything going on right the sand reacting to all of the impacts on it the monsters doing things we have these big clashes and then look the dashama pounded the sand with an attack made a dent and then revealed an item to grab that was previously buried that we then grab with our Slinger and it's an ancient coin that's a lovely little detail and makes me think there might be a lot of item collections or discoveries to do there's also just a lot of monsters on this map like at least eight or so large monsters and that is amazing to see we also have a little look at the items as we scroll by and there is a lot going on here all of which we kind of recognize but then we get this nice expanded view that gives you a little bit more options more categories we have the fishing rods so fishing still a thing and then here look we see the caption net which is everything to me that is definitely the caption net right the capture net is right there it's the capture net capture emic life which means if we can capture them well we're got to put them somewhere right so maybe that then extends to rooms and pets like we had in world and Ice bond which was phenomen Al the caption net guys this might be the biggest confirmation of the entire game for me all right don't judge me oh but yeah having this little expanded feature so you can have items in categories and then cycle between them as opposed to along them like all your health potions or your meat stacked up together that is a lovely bit of quality of life and then at the bottom left as you've been seeing we do have a specific clear what time of day and what weather stage you're in while hunting so it's day and we're currently in the sand tide and you might notice that that changes a little bit so now that we've actually attacked the dasi gam the timer has started as well so we still have the usual timer despite the smooth transition between it all and so far he is being very Brave and Bold letting them all stay together but then we finally get the large dunk pod which of course signifies the changing of the weather the timing on that is hilarious but we're dispersing the pack with the dunk pod and then the lightning rolls in and we get to see what it's like to have just this drastic change as a moment in the hunt and on the mini map you can tell which one's the alpha obviously it's marked and you know your hunt tagget but it does have a bigger more red symbol than the others so that's nice presumably every monster that can be in a pack will have its leader that you want to Target actually grabbing items on the way past with your Slinger is great we've got a bahara chilling in the distance and then various little environmental things wedge beetles are returning giving us an aerial attack and then we go into Mountain so a lot of your environmental stuff as I've said you will notice return like your Wiggly ly for stamina management but then on the mount you'll notice that we have knife attack like normal but also weapon attack so you can just use your weapon to attack on the mount not just as the finisher move around between the body parts yes but you can do a nice little bit of stabbing and then we get our finisher and the great zard finisher is putting the weapon in and then running along its back dragging it is that not incredible and then here we get a nice little look at we have wounded the dasu gamma and the reward for that is a dasu gam part now it said dohu gam for plus which would imply high rank but we're seeing low rank hammer and damage so I'm assuming that's a quirk of the demo but yeah breaking passs instantly just gives you a item reward as you do it we've been creating wounds throughout the hunt the new mechanic and then we immediately get to see our new Raptors charging in and getting some bites out of the dashu gammer and just all of this happening so naturally like I've watched so many hunts that have come out so far and everything happens so differently yet so seamlessly you can have so many different experiences which is one of the things mon is so good at due to how everything meshes together all of these creatures you and the environment so we do get a spot of row in the background which is quite ominous but it also provides a kind of tactical opportunity to go use it then we have ourselves an attempt at also the fact that you can range hook the wiggly ly and eat it it's so mean just ripping it from its log so we load it over to the bahara and then we get proper Turf walls we knew that they were in but seeing it actually pop up as a Turf wall is nice and thus the turf war commences very well than ice Bonnie in that you just kind of watch it happen and the Monsters deal damage to each other but one thing to note is the damage right wait for it and 132 damage from this Turf War what we know about turf war in World and Ice Bar is they do a percent of the monster's Health each time they happen depending on who takes damage so 132 damage keep that in mind from this Turf and also the balhara has created this sand pit the T Hunter almost very much fell into which is such a cool moment and you can use it to law the do gammer in as well if you so wish but there is someone else we need to invite to this party at the Oasis and something I like here which is a just little detail always lovely to see the radar is having a a lovely drink at the Oasis a little bit of ecology he's got his lifestyle he's going through his cycle he's not expecting to be interrupted by a rude Hunter wanting to use him as a well weapon he's just having a nice little drink parod too and just having this little left information of every bit of endemic life that is useful near you is really really nice to see I'm sure I will be turning it off but it is cool that it is a thing so here he is our Thunder flying wyvern a of the windward PLS Community calling it Thor Malala when it was first teased and yeah Thor mgala acknowledged by Capcom themselves is really nice to see and you'll also notice there is a very fresque Telegraph of the lightning strikes like when you're on at that map in Frontier that has the consistent lightning strikes it does light up on the floor where it's going to happen you can see in front there is just that little spot crackling uh that will be the prelude to a strike so you can be aware you're not just randomly Zapped out of nowhere but we have the LA pod which is then used to force him with this kind of threat line to chase the hunter which has chased him right into the ray down now remember that 123 damage that a Turf War dealt let's have a look at how much damage this guy is going to deal just another General attack yeah 100 okay interesting and then the rail gun oh almost a thousand huh okay that's fun wow he's so so powerful I am very much a fan of R now and I feel like he's going to become a lot of people's well maybe not complete favorite though certainly a lot of them too but certainly up there in estimation then here we see this great Thunderburg no effect on radar which you know makes a lot of sense but you might be like wait what do you mean no effect well great thunderbugs are back and they are environmental paralysis traps you can activate them low the monster in and then it's like a nice little parat trap also the her of herivar all huddled up as they walk past is so cute so we broke it away from radar chasing the doag gammer into a canyon and it is here that we see something truly horrifying you'll know it when you spot it at least you should but we also get to look at some environmental n dropping it down the Boulder and we use the Slinger to do it we don't have to waste ammo firing at it which is a lovely little addition we get more part breaks we get more items for doing that and we get a helpless flailing bear to attack at to Leisure going into Focus mode and seeing the wounds and here you might see what I'm talking about you see on the right there's a new little boogy fellow yeah we've got a new bug small monster a new little mini neop Teran and he looks like a beetle mosquito and a it's like no let's not just bring VB back let's make something even worse than vestbo and in that kind of fidelity it is horrifying seeing great swords slicing attack many many hits so hey Elemental status great sword and then a nice big damage as you go through all the wounds so talking of wounds and doam monsters have unique special mechanics to them dashu gamas for example when he enrages he muscles swell up and gets angry but that also means that he forcibly reopens all of the wounds that you have done throughout the hunt giving you a chance to use them and pop them again which is really neat and I'm very fascinated to see what other monsters have unique to them like that look at it look at it look at it the wavy kind of strandy hair coming out of it ah oh my God I hope there's not a big well no that's not true I do hope there's a big version of it but there it is and here we get to actually see the thunderbug trap in action we go in it we use it to activate it get them all excited and the dashama chasing the hunter is going to walk himself right into it and get a paralysis off which is really neat it is interesting that our Handler is just kind of here around us just sort of watching the fight you'd think they'd kind of hang back but hey that's uh completely okay we get another Focus mode strike off which is lovely and just this whole little section right this Canyon with the ferite the lightning flashing it's just brilliant it really really is so we have an SOS flare fired and then we see support Hunter Alesa Olivia and Roso now we know Olivia is a proper character we've seen her in cutcenes with us for the trailer for our new spider so does that imply that Roso and Alessa will be twoo and they will also get introduced officially in stories but yes we confirm that at any point you can fire your SOS flare while offline single player and getting a full team of NPC Hunters to affect you and they really stress they have put a lot into the eye of them they will respect what you're doing they won't wake up sleeping monsters they will hunt harmoniously as possible with you the player which is really really cool to see and also we get a little bit of chatak Cabra so so far we've had dasama chatak Cabra bahara row multiples of each all the herbs in the background like it's busy and thriving and well wild and that is great also as we see there the perfect guard on the great sword it is coming up as a perfect guard so yeah great sword does have a perfect guard I assume there's got to be some sort of followup to it that's not being done yet so that's very very exciting to see and then just the landscape with all the lightning I just can't cope pulling down a vine trap to act as a pseudo Pitfall we've seen them before in world and Ice spawn but they're even more friendly to use now cuz you just essentially set them up L LA the monster over and you get this nice little trap which is great then we get to see the weather return to normal from your storm back to your sand and then the grass doth grow which is lovely and as a little bit of detail as we just mentioned the grass fire element and fire will set grass and dry things on fire and spreading it and creating the sort of blade is like you would expect from it being flung around which is just a lovely little element of detail s Dashi gammer is injured he's limping away and he is ready for the full sleigh heading to a nest as you might expect in order to go to sleep and give us the opportunity to do a wake up hit though we have switched to light bow gun so very very sad about that in any case as you can see the MC Hunters do relax and wait for you which is is good and Barrel bombs don't get used here but we can of course have them and you can move them and you can throw them now to so you really can get some proper nice wakeup hit synergies going in in any case then once the dagama has been slain you'll notice that as we didn't know but it's good to see it you physically stand on the monster now so no more Monster houses which is a shame but we can carve the hunt end and you can Force the hunt to end immediately which is a nice extra quality of life too so yeah wow right like a lot of good stuff to go over but this is just the start let's talk some very specific interesting details so a lot of the other details did come up during the second hunt that they did which is nice to see and as we can see yeah health is responding as it should and the lower you get the more intense the wob wob wob gets to kind of make you feel the heartbeat of the hunter getting more hectic and actually there is a mechanic that if the monster is about to do its big main powerful attack your wibbly Health B Bar will go crazy as a warning and your Hunter will flash too this is interesting cuz it's like rise and sunbreak where your Hunters are constantly going he's doing a big attack watch out with their voice lines but visually here I've seen a lot of people say it's too handh holdy but I'm not sure I really agree if you're experienced you know what attacks the monster is doing and if you're not experienced you're not going to know how to properly deal with that warning anyway cuz you've not experienced the attack I think it's just a fine little bit of UI integrated with the game and that's okay and I have to assume there will be an option to toggle it on or off depending on your preference but it is certainly a bold choice and also negative statuses like paralysis or stun you can have a timer above them on the UI to show you exactly how long you are going to be stunned for that's left I'm not sure how I feel about that one but it is a thing it seems that most of the weapons will have some sort of timing reward attack like the great sword uppercut that will let you play a lot more intimately around what the monster's doing which is really nice to see you've got Supply items that will be delivered directly into your secret's item pouch yes your secret has an extra item pouch for you which is really nice to integrate into the hunt give you more options and here we see the map currently flat but you can give it a rotate to get some freed nness and this also gives us a nice scope of the windward Plains we see that massive Zone with the Oasis in the middle the more tunnels and corridors the camp that we came from all of the various monsters around the place it is a colossal Zone there is layers to it as well and you can really get a proper good look thanks to that map which is really really nice to see here's another look at said map then as you can maneuver it around and rotate it this was said as a direct response to people being a little bit confused with the Ancient Forest and the verticality of it so actually being able to get that depth from the map is a really nice little upgrade for us and as we see you flip it up you get a good eye of everything we see where our hometown is on the left and there is clearly a lot of this map to explore which is really really nice and we see that River at the top and we know that a river leads to the Scarlet Forest so I assume the Scarlet Forest will be past Zone 10 if we're going to look at a connected world like that and the fact that it is just in like floating it's not a different screen you can still see the map and what's going on is a really lovely bit of quality of life so then we get a small monster name confirmed we knew about him it's the big lizard crocodile thing but it's called a guos and it has a sore horn that you can interact with that is literally its horn it's a jagged horn that yes looks like a saw but what you can do is you can yink its horn away from it which just feels so mean it's just sleeping peacefully and you rip off its horn and that gives you bleeding pawns which then can be used on the monster to force it to have extra wounds so that's a really nice little integration of the local Wildlife there then we get to have a little look at cooking on the go just setting up your grill you still are in the world here you can get attacked by by monsters if you do it in a silly place but then we can choose to add our own ingredients which you need to either buy from the local Villages or gather yourself and each one will be tied to a skill that you want to activate and you can do so on the go which is really really nice a full min max mix and match combination from your own ingredient Supply not just permanent campen so that's great and then yeah the just absolutely phenomenal animation of it all it just looks so godamn delicious doesn't it so that's really really nice on the go proper skill cooking you're not tied down to it just lets everything flow that little bit smoother so with the dagama killed once more we actually get to see the end Quest immediately function used which does exactly what it says on the tin it ends the quest immediately and as we knew but it is nice to see just seamlessly you're still just stood there that's all well and good you get your Awards there's no like UI pop up that you have to sort through everything is just continuous and flowing and that is so excellent so you can start a hunt by just hitting a monster and then the hunt starts but you can also pop open your map and actually choose a monster that you want to hunt and if while hunting this doshu Gama say you attacked the chatak Cabra on the map loads and injured it you could then choose that chatak Cabra as your next actual Quest and it would have the injuries that you dealt to it while fighting the other monster things retain and remember while they're on the map and that's lovely we then also see one of the popup camps that we have put out the way here and you can fast travel to it they can be destroyed so placement matters and also your SOS hunters will appear by them if they can so that's also something that is important so we do see the Fast Travel happen we get to the camp and here we go and then we get that lovely example of what the actual Quest menu is like in Wilds if you choose to go through that instead of just attacking the monster or selecting it on the map and this is what it looks like we have our little info levels we have the rewards of what's going on we can see what's it going to give us and then different hunts of the same monster have different amounts of rewards so you can choose the one that best fits for what you're actually after so that's really really nice the environment affecting it and then you just literally summon the quest we'd go hunt this bahara and you are good to go so they really have integrated the quest board just into the flow of the game play as opposed to a stage on preparing for your quest and that is absolutely fantastic I just wonder how story quests and introductions of new monsters are going to happen that's something I really really want to see oh we do also get a name confirmation on our new Wing Drakes which are the bowos and it does seem like every single new little small monster has something you can like pull off it to give you a bit of Slinger ammo which again is just really mean but that gives you your screamer pods so it's a nice extra source of them while you're doing things but yeah other than that we have reached an end for now as I say we will be uh bringing you more exclusive gameplay in the coming days we'll be learning a lot more and just generally everything is phenomenal is it not just wow on every level let me know what your guys thoughts are let me know if you spotted anything that I not talked about and for now like you enjoy this subscribe hit the bell
