Tangent Sourcing on LinkedIn

tangents on linkedin tangent sourcing in my opinion is the best type of sourcing it brings out the most powerful results so check out this video right now to see how i do it hey welcome to the millionaire recruiter i'm brianna rooney your millionaire recruiter and if you have not seen this channel before it's definitely about upping your game as a recruiter so what's exciting today is it's gonna be a really fun video for me and hopefully a fun video for you because this is my favorite type of sourcing and i call it tangent sourcing and this is what really gets me excited to source and to find hidden gems and i think that if you're going to really step up your game and be an amazing recruiter that gets great results then you're gonna need to think outside the box and so i feel like creative problem solving is or creative problem thinking perhaps is where i live in and i really enjoy and this is to find people that have never been found i think that's really interesting it's super powerful and you don't want to fish in the same pond that every single recruiter fishes in now luckily for linkedin is it's so huge and it's really based on your own network and then therefore your network's network right so in theory i could do one search you can put in the same exact search and we're not going to have the same results which is really fun however there is going to start to be overlap especially you know you should be in a niche market please tell me you're in a niche market i'm in tech and so eventually we will start overlapping and i would say engineers get at least 25 messages a day at least at this point i know i get about that many so um i can imagine engineers who knows but anyways let's get to it i'm gonna do a fun share screen and i'm gonna do it on linkedin recruiter also i do know that not everyone uses linkedin recruiter it is very expensive but it's a very powerful tool and it will definitely pay for itself pretty quickly i would say um so i will do another video on this on just regular linkedin because regular linkedin is super powerful and then i'll do another video on sales navigator which i gotta tell you i'm kind of a novice level on sales navigator it's something that i found earlier this year i've been on recruiter for so long in regular linkedin that this is an interesting middle ground um i don't love love the interface like the whole look of it but it's still super crazy powerful and it's a lot cheaper than linkedin recruiter so enjoy this video and please do tangent sourcing and have fun okay so welcome to my linkedin recruiter so today i'm going to talk about attention to recruiting which is my favorite which i told you but okay so i decided let's use i don't know i'm like a fan girl for pinterest so let's use pinterest as an example i just um obviously went on their lovely site went on their career page let's say i am looking for a data engineer so um this isn't about teaching you how to look for data engineers but you know very quickly just because i can't help myself here's all the keywords that we can put in our search right okay so let's go here let's just start it up and i'm just gonna make it a little easy for myself by the way sometimes easy isn't the right thing to do but let's just do data engineer let's do python and let's kind of bring it over here and let's start it out so there's lots of things that i can do um you know what let's also put the job title here this is fun and i recently learned this is called a hamburger interesting um they only have two things here and they all apply to me so fantastic let's just say i don't know that's in toronto i don't know if it matters that much for this particular thing but let's just do canada that sounds fun let's just do toronto even though lots of people are or if i could spell toronto okay there we go lots of people are remote and will remain remote but let's check it out okay so all i did right here is data engineer in toronto ooh this one already looks good but i did python here in the keywords you can definitely put them here in the skills and assessments whatever you want to do but i definitely also want to put here um how long they've been at their current company yours and current company let's say i want them for at least two years i know it was a little funky last year so that's hard i want them from two to ten and again this video is not about that but i will do a video on that because people ask about searches all the time this is about tangents okay so i have 344 results i think that's a solid place to start what i'm going to do is just kind of browse really to see how long someone's been at their current company don't get tricked by this see how this person obviously got promoted now he's a senior data engineer it's not hasn't only been there for a year he's been there the whole time so definitely pay attention to that so let's just say i go on this person's profile let's say i really like it um has exactly what i need look at this is exactly what's on the job description that we saw has enough experience for for me for this particular thing so what am i going to do i've never heard of this company i've definitely done a lot of sourcing in the states but not so much in canada so this is actually even more fun to do a tangent thing on this because i don't know a lot of the companies so i'm gonna go into this the human data science company whoa that is super interesting and they're here in the states um that sounds fun and that's a lot of data and that's sensitive data so pinterest it has a ton of real-time data so you definitely want to target companies that handle all of that but what's very interesting to this is there's probably a lot of privacy and i do know pinterest you know that's an issue right for any social media privacy is definitely an issue so um maybe it's not uh the consumer you know platform that we're looking for but i'm still interested and they're probably still really great data engineers so what you can do too and then be like all right i'm going to note this company and i'm going to go back to it it wasn't like a home run for me so i'm not going to completely tangent my search but i'm going to go down and check it out i haven't heard of this company either right um i'd want a little more experience hsbc i don't want to bank like that for sure i know i don't want to bank um although it is security like i just spoke about it's a little bit different and it moves a lot slower and they just tend to not work with the hottest of technologies so okay let's just take a look at this one right here so we're going to go on this person's profile again i'm going to see okay does this person have what i need if this person has what i need again there's probably tons of people at this company that has the same thing so i'm gonna go here marketing advertising okay that's interesting right now keep in mind before i actually do a search what you didn't see is you didn't see the sourcing map and for me to find the common denominators but that this video isn't about that this video is about tangents um but this is interesting series d got 18 million well now now i'm going to keep this company up as well as maybe a target for me um now i'm also over here you always want to look at your similar profiles and do i reckon and recognize any these people are probably really good too oh another one at lyft oh i can't help but i want to click on her let's see okay so she's at lyft obviously lyft and facebook yahoo um she went to urbana too super well educated right um so what's great about this is um there are companies that are at a similar level as pinterest similar size i would say in users and again dealing with a lot of data in real time there's not a ton of companies that deal with a ton of data so you're gonna start making lists okay so lyft for sure now i'm gonna go on similar profiles again because she's spot on right i'm going to go here oh instagram awesome this person's great wework facebook perfect so now i'm going to contact her as well i'm going to go over here now i'm having a lot of fun now i'm really going on tangents ooh another facebook now you do have to be careful with fang companies right uh because they definitely pay a lot and but this is pinterest so pinterest does too right you have to know your clients you have to know what you're working with um i'm using obviously two giant companies right but that's okay um this is just all about tangents i'm gonna see this data at disney now what you could do obviously facebook for example is a giant company you could go all down this list all day long and i could literally just hit up everyone from facebook that's a data engineer anyone from instagram that's a data engineer um that could take me days and that's actually really fun but what if i want to even go over here data engineer snowflake walt disney fanatics so these are more companies that maybe not everyone always thinks about but perhaps we should i would imagine fanatics has a lot of data disney has a lot of data um so amazon we got amazon's got a ton of data so you want to look to see where someone is now and where they came from because those are those are going to be some common denominators we got netflix so again i'm listing you know some some heavy hitters here but if you want to find the real gems you're going to see where they came from before this person came from um yahoo we got another chris charles here at mars i've never even heard of this company see this is the cool stuff when you haven't heard this company i haven't heard of hagerty i need to know all these companies this person just went here that's interesting so now i'm going to go on mars what is family and what does this do ah that's interesting i don't know that to me is a little more boring um so i might not tangent there right let's go to hagerty what is this let's drive us together ooh cars okay is this going to have a ton of data that's what you just have to keep asking yourself because keep in mind there's going to be data on any site but how big is that data how much are they working with is this going to work for me so again i can just go to people let's show you how to do that if you've seen my sourcing map video you will know that i have definitely done this for you guys but let's just put i'll just put data engineer right let's see how many data engineers they have only three so if they only have three i would assume their data is not that huge or maybe they're just getting going but what i could do is just go ahead and grab those three people right here they are down here but that doesn't work so now i know okay i'm kind of at a dead end but since there's only three i might just want to hit up these three really quickly okay real estate a lot of data so those are the different tangents just in general that i would go on um and i would tackle so if you notice let's go back here for a second here we go if you notice we're on chris he's got this great data i went during through his different companies maybe even baby center maybe you want to go three companies depending how long it is i definitely looked at similar profiles and then found those common denominators and you always always need to learn how or learn different companies because there are hundreds of thousands of millions of companies and just because they're not the ones that you know about doesn't mean that they're not good companies with good talent so that's really important to start looking at their at their engineers a little bit because what happens is great engineers tend to stay with great engineers because they need to push each other um so there's a b and c squads in companies and that's you know good or bad and that can come from you know quite a few different things of people's backgrounds but that seems to be how it's been working so find those common denominators go on different tangents go down and just do straight up company lists and then what you're going to want to do is make an excel sheet so i have a whole doc and i have a running list that i do every single day that i add companies to so for example um let's say hagerty i really like hagerty i'm gonna say look they do they do python they have the terraform they have all of these things that i need um as far as big data goes or infrastructure whatever you're doing i'm gonna put that note it and i'm gonna have a little tab that says python so now i know how good he uses python now i know hagerty has big data um i will also note does hagerty have a android or ios app both i'm going to note all of those things because then if if i'm looking for a mobile engineer i'm just going to go straight up to all of my little uh hit list companies is what i like to call it and i'm going to say all right which one of my hit list companies that i deemed a good company to get people from those are those are two different things um i'm gonna look to see who has an app and then i'm gonna go through there and of course you're gonna do you know the apps that are on your phone right the ones that you use but again there's tons and tons and tons of different companies that you can grab people from so keep an open mind let your mind go on tangents don't get stuck here's what happens a lot of times people get stuck on a search and they're there for way too long so many times i did okay hold on let's go right here let's get out of here so a lot of people will not get off this search they will stay and go through 344 people and then they will be done and they will think that that was a great search and they feel accomplished that to me is not a great thing you can do that and make perhaps you should do that and then that would leave me on a different tangent as i'd probably go to the last page first um so i'd go to page 10 and i'd work my way back again you want to find the gems and you can't find the gems by just you know click next click next it's also not fun if you're not having fun i'm sorry you're not gonna be a great recruiter and perhaps find a different job so um i hope you enjoyed the tangents i hope you also do tangent sourcing so i'll see you on the flip side of the camera and see you next week okay hopefully you enjoyed tangent sourcing and hopefully you're putting it into your daily regimen um i again like as you saw it when like all these different boom boom squirrel squirrel squirrel of all these different ideas but i found some real gems and then i'm also keeping like i showed you that list ongoing list to find common denominators and to know what companies are great and kind of hit them up by that so there's all sorts of sorts of things to do via sourcing so enjoy and i would love to hear more from you as to what your little gem of sourcing is or did you did you place people off tangent sourcing do you track that um i think you should i think you should track where you're getting people from not just linkedin but where that actually that i guess motivation and that message came from it's all good to know because you want to you know be in that nice honey hole and know that if it works it's going to work again right so i will see you every thursday at noon and do not forget that money is just a vessel to do all the amazing things you want to go do go live your life up your game see you next week you
