you got to see the person i have become spread your wings and i know when god took you back he said hallelujah what can you say about the song it's so emotional right now to start with our lesson i borrowed some lines from it and highlighted some words read the following sentences with me i took the supermarket flowers from the windowsill i poured the old ginger beer down the sink you were an angel in the shape of my mom john said he'd drive then put his hand on my cheek and wipe a tear from the side of my face i know a life with love as a life that's been lived [Music] these highlighted words are examples of what we are going to talk about today and for sure you already have an idea what they are they are [Music] prepositions [Music] before we start with our discussion here are the topics that you will learn today first is the definition of prepositions phrasal prepositions and prepositional phrase and its functions let's start with our discussion [Music] prepositions are words that relate nouns and pronouns to the other words in a sentence they show locations or positions and they also give directions [Music] some of the most common prepositions are in on and at and for with and by where here are more examples of prepositions [Music] [Music] you may notice that some prepositions are adverbs and conjunctions too how will you know if a word really functions as a preposition or another part of speech notice these examples matthew went to the market to buy flowers before he went to the hospital matthew visited his mother in the hospital before matthew placed the flowers before the bed before in the first sentence is a conjunction it connects two closes matthew went to the market to buy flowers and he went to the hospital before in the second sentence is an adverb of time it answers the question when did matthew visit his mother in hospital the answer is before before in the third sentence is a preposition it comes with an object which is the bed it tells the location where matthew placed in the flowers which is before the bed that's how a preposition functions here are more sample sentences that show how prepositions tiny as they are make a big difference in the idea that sentences express the dog runs towards the boy the dog runs with the boy the dog runs around the boy be at the gate by 7 am be at the gate around 7 00 am be at the gate at 7 00 am compound prepositions made of two or more words are called phrasal prepositions take note that phrasal prepositions are different from prepositional phrases phrasal prepositions are immediately followed by the noun or pronoun check out these examples in view of the holiday the celebration will be moved next weekend the missing cell phone was found next to the garbage can in the first sentence in view of is immediately followed by the noun holiday and the second sentence next to is immediately followed by garbage can here are more examples of phrasal [Music] prepositions [Music] now let's talk about prepositional phrase it consists of a preposition and a noun or a pronoun that is referred to as the object of the preposition here are some examples [Music] inside the green box within the yellow lane on top of the wooden table in the first phrase inside is the preposition and box is the object and the second phrase within is the preposition and lane is the object in the third phrase on top of is the phrasal preposition and table is the object [Music] a prepositional phrase may function in two ways as an adjective if it describes a noun or a pronoun or as an adverb if it describes a verb notice the following examples the cat on the roof is a stray one on the roof is the prepositional phrase and since it is describing the cat which is a noun the prepositional phrase functions as an adjective the cat sleeps under the bed under the bed is the prepositional phrase and since it is describing the action in the sentence which is sleeps it functions as an adverb [Music] it's time for your exercise study the picture that i will show you and follow these instructions [Music] write five sentences about the picture use at least one preposition in every sentence make sure it has an object too encircle the preposition then underline the prepositional phrase you may only use a preposition once write the sentences on your notebook and we will check them on our live session [Music] [Music] we are done with our discussion it's now time for us to have a short reflection let us read psalm 37 23 the steps of man are established by the lord when he delights in his way prepositions show us location and direction this is also what god does for all of us just as what our verse tells us he establishes our steps he guides us and directs us to the fulfillment of his plans his word reveals what we should do and what promises we can hold on to considering that the lord knows best let us submit to his will and obey him [Music] for sure wherever he leads us it will be for our own good glory to god [Music] that's it for today thank you for watching this video if there are parts of the discussion that are not clear to you you have the choice to watch this video again or you may also take note of your questions and book a consultation date with me before i say goodbye let me think and acknowledge the following sources that made this learning material possible [Music] it's a wrap once again thank you god bless stay safe till i see you again this is teacher adam signing off [Music] bye [Music] you
