Hola amigos, bienvenidos. Hoy nosotros vamos a aprender el presente progresivo en español. El tutor de lenguaje. Yes friends, tutor de lenguaje means the language tutor.
That's right. Well, today, guys, what I just said was that we're going to learn the present progressive. Presente progresivo.
Now, I've actually had a few requests online, people sending me messages saying, hey, we need the present progressive. Well, today's your day. Today, we're doing present progressive.
Well, guys, what is the present progressive? It's really easy. You know, I want to start by saying this.
The present progressive is a verb tense, but... it's progressing right now. It's that simple.
I want to just start out with a little bit of explanation by giving you some examples. So here's one. I study. Now that's just the normal present tense. I study.
Yo estudio. You know, I take the AR verb, estudiar. I take off the AR.
I put the ending on it. Put the O. Yo estudio. That's just the normal present tense. Okay.
But present tense can mean I'm studying, but it can also mean like I study in general. Like I study a lot or I study every Friday or whatever the case may be. Present progressive means it's progressing right now.
It's going on right now. And that, the difference between I study and the present progressive is present progressive is. I am studying now.
Okay, it's going on now. So present progressive is happening now. So normal present tense, I study. Present progressive, I am studying.
So now in English, we have either is, am, or are, and we have an ing verb, okay? So we have I am, or you are, or he is, or she is, or we are, or they are, and you've got a verb with ing. I am studying. Here's another example. She eats.
That's just normal present tense. But present progressive, she is eating. Progressing now.
Okay, so how do we do present progressive in Spanish? Well, we do it exactly like we do in English. We're going to have I or she or you or he, and we're going to have an is, an am, and an are. And then we're going to have a verb with ing on it.
It's just like English. Okay, now let's first of all talk about that is, am, and are. Now we know two ways to say is, am, and are.
We know forms of ser and we know forms of estar. So first, let's think about which one would we use for present progressive. Would I use a form of ser or would I use a form of estar?
Well, let's ask ourselves the question, is it poppin'? Permanent condition, occupation, place of origin, identification, nationality. No, it's none of those. We're not talking about someone's characteristics and attributes of who they are as a person.
So it really can't be said. Now, when we talked about estar many episodes ago, we said that we know it's estar by asking ourselves, Is it how you feel or where you are? Because that is when we use estar. You can't really say that it's how you feel or where you are, but estar is also some temporary conditions, okay? And this is a case of temporary condition.
It can't be ser, so it has to be estar, a temporary state of being, a temporary condition, okay? So we're going to use forms de estar to say the I am, the she is, the we are, you are, they are, and all that kind of thing. All right, so that's how we start out the sentence.
Now, how do we say ing in Spanish? Well, in English, we just put I-N-G. Well, guess what? There's a way in Spanish that you can remember also.
AR verbs. I want to put this up on the screen right here for you. AR verbs are going to use this right here for ing. A-N-D-O.
Ando. That is ing. And we take the AR verb and we take off the AR and we just put ing on it. Okay, and you'll see what I mean in just a second.
This is super easy. Now, IR and ER verbs, you know, they hang out a lot, right? They're buddies. They're going to use the same ending for ing. Okay, so they're going to use this one. I-E-N-D-O, yendo.
So they're taking a little bit of the IR, a little bit of the ER. And they're saying, hey, let's both do this thing. All right, yendo. So AR verbs, ing is ando, and ER and IR is yendo. Well, I think it's time for us just to look at some examples.
So let's go back to that one we talked about a while ago. I am studying. Okay, let's put that up here.
I am studying. We know I am would be yo estoy. All right, now, studying. Take the verb estudiar, to study. Take off the AR.
Let's put ing on it right here. I am studying. Yo estoy estudiando. Estudiando. Now, with estudiar, you got I-A-R at the end.
Remember to only take off that A-R. You still got an I there. Yo estoy estudiando. And there you have it. It's just like English.
I am studying. Yo estoy estudiando. Now, could you just say, estoy estudiando, and not say the yo?
Absolutely. Of course you can. Because those pronouns are not always necessary, are they?
All right. So estoy estudiando. No problem.
We can say that. Now let's go to that other one a while ago where we talked about she eats and she is eating. Well, let's do that one because it's good to look at it with an ER verb.
All right. So we're going to say she is by using the form of estar. Ella está.
Ella está. Because that's how we say she is when you're talking about the verb estar. Eat is comer.
Take off the ER. Put the ing for ERs and IRs, which is yendo. So we're going to put that right there.
And this is what we get. Ella está comiendo. Ella está comiendo. There you go.
Now let's do one more. I want to do one more using an IR verb. Just so I can make sure I covered all the bases for you, okay? Let's take we are writing.
We are writing. And the verb to write, you'll probably remember, is escribir. Escribir. All right, so let's put up we are. Now, we're going to go ahead and use the pronoun just for the fun of it right now.
Nosotros estamos. Take the verb escribir. Take the ir off.
Put yendo on it because it's the same as er. Nosotros estamos escribiendo. Escribiendo. And then you have we are writing.
Well, guys, look, that's how you do present progressive. Now, I want to encourage you to get online, though, and do a little research. There are a handful of verbs that have irregular ing forms. Can we get an example of one? The verb ir, to go.
Well, if we just, you know, it's just an IR. So what do we do with that? I mean, we just make it yendo, I-E-N-D-O, kind of. But we're going to change the spelling to Y-E-N-D-O. So I am going.
Yo estoy yendo. I am going. So that's an example of an irregular ing form. I'm going to also tell you that verbs that have two E's in the middle, like leer, to read, creer, to believe or think, we're going to use a Y in the middle of those two.
Leyendo. Creyendo. All right, so look up.
irregular ing forms, just so you can be aware of those as you're forming sentences, okay? But in the meantime, I want you to practice the present progressive as much as you can. Bring it into your conversation. And when you listen to conversation, start taking notes, mental notes, of how often the present progressive is used in Spanish conversations, okay? Well, keep on practicing, my friends, and I will see you next time on the next lesson of the Language Tutor.
