hello everyone we are Claudia Indian an international couple from Germany in Spain based here in Zurich Switzerland and in today's video we're going to talk with you about how much do software engineers make in Zurich we did a quite Successful video asking people on the streets what do they earn and what their professions are and actually we didn't encounter any software engineer that could tell us their earnings so we decided to create a special video today for you about this topic before we begin our channel is a lot about life in Zurich so videos from what is the cost of living in the city to how much do people earn so if you are interested in this kind of topics please subscribe to our Channel and they said let's start as we can see here in this graph by cluster if we can see that Sonic offers the top salary for software Engineers followed by Lana Oslo in Amsterdam so definitely a great place to continue your career or start your career in software engineering so let's start with the basic fact let's start simply the average salary of a software engineer is 110 000 per year in silly and what does that mean we have here a very nice graph which we found on a website called swissdefjobs.ch so here you can see as we said before the median salary or the average salary of a Swiss buffer engineering job in Switzerland is 110 but for sure that differs based on the level you've encountered yourself in so let's say you're a junior junior maybe means you just start out or you have around two years of experience so you can see this bottom 10 probably is something like internships or people who just really have zero experience but I would say the basic is like 70k you can encounter in Switzerland once you have like just come from University you have no experience at all you're just very fresh that but normally people make around 80k which you can see here also is the median salary if you're very lucky in the junior you can already make 100K but it's more or less the rare case where you see it's just up 10 percent regular so intermediate means around I think three years experience to maybe seven years of experience so if you're in this field of three to seven years of experience you could at least expect to earn 80k and if you're doing very well in maybe have a good job or made good negotiations you can already encounter yourself earning around 130k which is pretty good I think and for seniors you can expect at least we see here around 100K we say around 100K you can expect at least and you would earn as a median 115k for sure this is median and this depends on the company you're working in there are some companies which pay much better and other companies which fair not as good such as smaller companies or startups or on the other hand Google or Microsoft pay very very good salaries so for sure this is just an average picture of the whole Market but highly differs depending on which company you apply to yes for example if you work as a software engineer let's say at Google we can say here thanks to Glassdoor that a software engineer could make between 153 000 francs and 227 000 francs per year whereas a senior software engineer could earn around 230k and 318k per year which are quite High salaries in comparison to the average um salary as software engineer in Zurich and of course like it's very competitive to enter to Google but if you are lucky enough and prepared enough you will be in a super good position to earn quite a good salary yes that's true so we wish you a better luck if you want to apply yes so let's say you're a software engineer and you are searching for jobs in Switzerland and especially Turkish you can go to this website called swissdefjobs.ch also another website we like to use is jobs.ch or just simply LinkedIn you see several jobs here with several experience levels and you see that the software engineer salary will always be around 100K 110k so I can scroll down here you see all these jobs of around 90 to 120 100 to 130 7100 this you see is a junior software engineer position and yeah so it's really nice this website and you can see very very the software range you should get and that also may help you a lot when you go into the negotiation process of the salary because in Switzerland when you apply for a job in your first interview normally you already negotiate your salary and then you have already negotiated basically in your first round second round is normative then just to do um kind of a small technical interview and the third interview is then like a coding question like an on-site uh Deep dive into some coding question um yeah but you basically have already negotiated your salary in the first round so better negotiated already early and well in the first round then later so as we said before it's quite competitive to get into Google but it's also not just competitive to get into Google it is also competitive to get a software engineering job in other places here in Turkey so what are the points to consider when you want to get a job as a software engineer in Switzerland especially Theory first of all you must talk English fluently and very well which probably you can if you're watching this video because this is all in English Second you should maybe speak German but it's not required for other jobs which are not Tech related very often German is really required like a must-have you have to speak it like fluently but for tech jobs very often it's just a nice to have or even not required at all because tech jobs are so much in demand and there's like more kind of Supply than there is offer from the side of the employees therefore German is not required very often but just nice to have and maybe here I would also include that maybe it would also be helpful to already have quite some experience as a software engineer in any other country Maybe that would make things easier to cut the eye of the HR person and give you an opportunity even to show up in the interview process yeah that's very true I mean the job market is quite competitive and because it is so competitive you probably have to have already some work experience beforehand before coming to Switzerland if you're from the European Union probably it's not as hard as if you're not from the European Union to get a job here in Switzerland especially as a software engineer Switzerland is not part of the European Union but it has specific agreements with the European Union that there is like an easier process of people from the European Union to enter the job market of Switzerland it's much easier to get a working Visa than for people who are not from the European Union so if you are from not from the European Union prepare yourself to be strong and because you have even more competition from people who are from the European Union who have kind of an advantage in terms of Visa regarding you yeah it's hard but we know like quite some friends we have some friends here that are from India in Bangladesh for example and they made it and they are in super big companies of course they were super well qualified they had already experience in the US and Europe so that helped them but um with this I want to say that it's hard but it's not impossible so we mentioned before that the median growth salary for a software engineer in series Switzerland is 110 000 but this means before tax how much tax do you have to pay in Switzerland in Switzerland not only you have to pay 15 to 25 percent on your gross salary so afterwards you probably don't have 110k but a little bit less and therefore we want to go with you now through a detailed calculation of you as a software engineer working in Switzerland and earning 100 000 and Swiss Francs per year we want to show you what actually is the salary you would earn after all the taxes you have to pay in the end of every month so with that said let's go so let's start with our calculation you earn as a software engineer living in Switzerland series 100 000 Swiss Francs a year what does that mean that means you're an around you earn 833.35 Swiss Francs every month sounds great but that is before tax so that is gross what comes here as tax in Switzerland first of all a very very common text or the most basic text is the hav text which is the itas on tintelution which means kind of your old age and survivors insurance which is people you have to pay into like a box of money which is used to pay the pension to other people so you pay into the pension box and then people who retire they take out the money from that box right like a circuit so this is the items antenna lesson um this is basically the first pillar in Switzerland there are three pillars of your retirement pension you have the hav pillar then you have the second pillar and the third pillar while the third pillar is um not mandatory it's you can do it if you want to do it but you don't have to do it whether the first and second pillars are mandatory so we have the HIV pillar which is 5.3 percent that means of your 833.356 francs every month you have to give to the state of Switzerland 441.65 Swiss Francs great so since we paid now our ahv taxes we also need to pay our alv taxes what does alv stands for alv stands for rites laws and fasicho so unemployed Insurance what's that that means that if you are out of employment the government is going to cover your salary 50 70 so let's say you lose your job then you're still able to get 70 from the state of your most recent uh salary because you have paid this a LV Insurance unemployment insurance so until you find new job you're able to get 70 of your insured uh salary which you had before but for sure you won't get that forever and it becomes with some requirements I don't know exactly all the requirements it comes with but you will have to apply for jobs and have to show that you also didn't find a job and you maybe cannot neglect any job or not neglect uh so many jobs because they will not paid forever to you they want that you find another job but until you find another job they are giving to give to you 70 of your insured last salary let's talk about the second pillar which is this bgv pillar it's a quite a long word and it has been passed 1800 1985. it's like also a mandatory system so the second pillar is also mandatory as the first beta has been mandatory the second pillar is basically for you to ensure that you have enough money when you retire in your retirement ages and you are not like suffering of poverty during your retirement percentage of how much you have to pay depends actually on your age if you're 25 to 34 years old you have to pay seven percent if you're 35 to 44 years old it's 10 it's 15 if you're 45 to 54 years old and 18 if you're 55 to 65 years for it what does that mean in this case the second pillar is paid by you and your employer together so let's say I'm 25 to 35 years old which is the case then my seven percent is split between me and my employer for example a very common scenario is that the employer pays four percent and you're paying three percent of the second pillar so in this regard it means that the seven percent is split into three and four so I have to pay three percent um uh kind of uh I have to give away three percent of my of my insured salary and this insured salary is not actually your gross salary the insured salary is your salary times seven divided by eight this is kind of a compensation they are doing here in Switzerland so yeah they are making this composition and of that you will have them to pay three percent into the second pillar in this regard of our salary of 833.35 Swiss Francs this would mean you have to pay around 218.75 Swiss Francs Additionally the second pillar has also another one which is not basis but standard and this standard is uh is not required but you can do it if you want to do it so you can pay a little bit more into the pension fund and have more retirement or you want to be more secure to have enough pension when you retire but for now we leave it here as an X because we say we we don't do it and finally you have to pay the credit which is the withholding tax which is basically if you're not from Switzerland if you're from somewhere else such as we are not from Switzerland you would have to pay withholding tax of um specific Resort index which is directly deducted from your gross salary if you're earning below 120 000 Swiss Francs per year this is the case if you earn more than 120 000 Swiss Francs per year you have to do your own tax sheet so you will have to do your own tax statement every year but if not then actually you never have to do a tax statement the government directly deducts the tax this withholding tax credit from your um from your salary and this withholding text the Credence layer depends also on how much do you earn so if you earn more the withholding tax is going up if you earn less the withholding taxes going down in our scenario the person here you as a software engineer and Siri can earn 100K so with that means per month you have to pay 9.6 percent of your gross salary it's directly calculated with the grocery and in this good guard you will have to pay 800 Swiss Francs every month as Credence doyer to give it to the state as tax on your survey so how much do we end up then with our survey we see that in the end of our month we have 6781.3 Swiss Francs after paying all this pillar one pillar two and the credit layer withholding tax of the state there's a finite statement we can say that from your gross salary monthly salary of 833.35 Swiss Francs here we're ending up with 6781.3 Swiss Francs with this said thank you very much for watching if
