Bubble CPAP Setup and Operation
Initial Setup
- Heater Pot and Water Chamber: Start by placing the heater pot and the water chamber on the back.
- Funnel and CPAP Stick: Attach the funnel; insert the CPAP stick.
- Blue Tubing: Connect the blue tubing to the heater pot.
Connecting Components
- Temperature Probes: Insert the temperature probes into the heater pot. Note: The probes push in rather than click in place.
- Pressure Pop: Attach the pressure pop-off.
- Oxygen Tubing: Connect the O2 tubing and attach it to the flow meter.
Assembling Tubing
- White Tubing: Connect one end to the CPAP stick at the back.
- Elbow Piece: Use the elbow piece to join two parts together.
Preparing Water Chamber
- Water Bag: Hang the water bag and connect it.
- Fill Chamber: Use sterile water to fill the chamber. Stop filling once the water flows over to the other side.
Leak Test
- Power and Warm-Up: Plug in the CPAP and turn on the heater. Set to invasive mode.
- Leak Test Preparation:
- Ensure CPAP stick is at 10.
- Elbow cap must be closed.
- Set flow meter to 1 liter.
- Check for Bubbles: Presence of bubbles indicates a successful leak test.
- Post-Test: Remove and discard the elbow piece.
Setting Up for Use
- Position Orders:
- Typically set CPAP to 5 or 6.
- Set the stick to 6 for CPAP of 6.
- Flow is generally set between 6 to 8 liters.
- FiO2 Setup:
- Set FiO2 to around 30.
- Connect the analyzer after removing the blue cap.
Final Setup
- Patient Connection:
- Nurse applies the nasal CPAP interface to the patient.
- Remove both adapters (blue and clear) from the interface.
- Connect to the patient ensuring bubbles in the chamber.
Confirmation
- Bubbles: Ensure bubbles are present indicating a good seal.
- Saturation Check: Confirm patient saturation levels are adequate.
Once all steps are confirmed and the patient is stable, the setup is complete.
