9 (in the hundredths place) has a value of 9/100.
8 (in the thousandths place) has a value of 8/1000.
Concept of Parts
Tenth
: represents
one out of ten
as a decimal fraction [ 1/10 = 0.1 ].
Hundredth
: represents
one out of a hundred
as a decimal fraction [ 1/100 = 0.01 ].
Thousandth
: represents
one out of a thousand
as a decimal fraction [ 1/1000 = 0.001 ].
Practical Examples
Example 1
The fraction 1/10 is represented by the value [ 0.1 ].
If there are 2 shaded: 2/10 = [ 0.2 ].
Example 2
A model with 100 squares:
One shaded: 1/100 = [ 0.01 ].
Example 3
Divided into 1000 squares:
One shaded: 1/1000 = [ 0.001 ].
