hello and welcome back to irish in my heart my youtube channel that i have created to help you learn irish so i hope that you're all doing well today the topic of this video is eclipses or as it is known in irish uru now if you're a complete beginner you might never have heard of this that's okay it's nothing to worry about just yet i am making a few videos to help you a bit with pronunciation and irish and i thought that this was a good one and it's one that i've been asked a few questions about so i thought making a little video would hopefully help to answer your questions and to help you understand the irish language a bit better so what does that word mean no it does not mean when the moon and the sun come together at the same time as i thought when i first seen it until i realized that that's eclipse and this is eclipses so get that out of your head okay we're talking about languages here we're talking about irish and the complexity of it eclipses is a phonetic change of an initial consonant under the influence of a preceding word now what the hell did i just say it's basically when a random letter is added to the beginning of a word now of course i say random because when you first see it it looks really random you're like okay so the word starts with p but there's a little b there why well the reason why and it is the same reason that we have lenition or shaving irish it is simply to make the language flow better for the flow of speech of the language keep in mind that eclipses does not change the meaning of a word it simply changes the spelling because you're adding an extra letter or two it just changes the pronunciation you avoid changing the shape of your mouth as much as possible now i'm going to give you an example the sentence i'm going to use then is i sat down on the ball i'm going to say that sentence without not one nation i keep thinking clinician okay so i'm going to say the sentence without eclipses and then i'm going to say it with eclipses so you can see the difference here's the sentence in irish without eclipses he me she's [Music] i sat down on the wall now i'm gonna say it with eclipses he may she is say it a bit quicker she is erin bala she is aaron mala notice how when i go from n to b it's a much harsher change than when i go from n to m air and bala when you make the b you bring your lips together just as you do with m but it's harsher bala whereas when i go from an the n to n it's much softer air and mala and mala it just makes the sentence smoother it flows easier i hope that that little example helps you to understand the reason for eclipses a little better i hope that this video is helpful so far if it is give it a little thumbs up so we have seven letters that pick up uru b c d f g p and t if you watched my previous video you would probably notice that some of those letters most of them can be united as well of course it depends on the situation there's different situations when you add an arrow to a word the first letter of that word becomes silent the sentence i said earlier on the wall air and mala the word was bawa but once i added the uru the m i dropped the pronunciation of the b and just pronounced m and the rest of the word the first one then the uru for b is m the array for c is g for example capital horse add g the eru it becomes gaple you drop the c it's silent the ur for d is n i'm going to use the word donegal for example where i'm from my home donegal in irish is dun na nao if i have to use uru i would say it like noon na nao instead of dun nun the uru for f is two letters actually it's b h b h in this situation you pronounce like v so you drop the f and pronounce v and the rest of the word for example when yog which means window add er bh it becomes the ur for g is n i'm going to use the word for love so that one's a little bit strange we wouldn't have that in english like the n and or together the uru for p is b so literally the only word i can think of is whole an irish paul with uru that becomes ball and last but not least we have t the uru for t is d for example cha which means house add d it becomes jah so there's only four situations which is three less than lunition so that's good to know and narrows it down now what i would say is you don't have to learn these situations off by heart honestly for me i remember just being able to use eclipses over time getting it right first situation i have for you is after preposition plus an which means the so after prepositions and the definite article combined it's not every preposition plus the that you're going to use eclipses after but it is a lot of prepositions i'm going to link down below a duolingo forum that i found on eclipses which really explains it like amazingly it's got examples i don't want to go into too much detail of every preposition but if you want to know then check out the article down below the second situation is after the numbers 7 to 10. if you checked out my luncheon video if you haven't already i'll have it linked up here you would know that after the numbers one two six the noun picks up shavu or h but with eclipses it's after the numbers 7 to 10. shocked instead of shocked third situation you're going to use eclipses is after the possessive adjectives are ours were yours plural and ah theirs a following noun is going to pick up eclipses and the fourth situation is after these other words after the word da which means if after mura which means unless after e which means in that is all i have about eclipses i really hope that you enjoyed it i'm learning a little bit more about uru i hope that going away from this video you have a better understanding and that it helps you to improve your pronunciation it'll take a bit of practice and getting used to i know you won't be able to know when exactly to use an error straight away if you watched my last video on lunition i had a giveaway in it that is still open and it will be until friday the 28th of august at 12 p.m irish time is when i will close it no more entries no exceptions don't be late you got time so get in there and get your butler's chocolates your mug and your lions teeth thank you so much for pointing that out to me one of my kind viewers i have a confession to make i feel like a few people watch that video including my family who are ashamed of me now and realized that i said leons are not lions i feel like that would have made it obvious dead giveaway giveaway i don't drink leon's tea i don't drink berries either but at least i would have been able to pronounce barry's i actually just drank own brand tea if i'm doing my shopping and sentra uh dones i'll just get their own brown tea and honestly they're always really nice but i didn't think it would be too exciting to throw in like oh here's centra on brown tea so i had to pick an irish brand and of course i picked one that i couldn't even pronounce go go win some leon's tea if you're
