hi everyone welcome to introductory biochemistry again this semester is virtual so you guys are doing it sitting at home or wherever you are but i wanted to give you a real feel of the lab as much as i can if you were here what would you see so if you see this is the regular biochemistry lab that you would have come if the labs were not online so first thing that you need to know for this semester is there are certain safety rules that we have to follow first is when we are in a lab we are not allowed to eat or drink anything so we keep the food and drinks outside the labs and whenever we are working in alarm we have to wear a lab coat so in future labs you will see when i am doing the lab i will always be wearing a lab coat and another thing of another level of safety comes from the safety goggles now as we do not work in the labs without our lab coats to protect the outside people and other places we do not go out of our labs with our lab coats on so if we have to run to take a sip of water or to the washroom we leave our lab coats in the lab because they can be having chemicals in them or even some microbes on them another level of protection that is provided is gloves so always when you're walking in alarm we wear gloves sometimes we are protect protecting our skin from the chemicals that we are handling but some of the experiments are so sensitive you will see that in a couple of weeks that the dlc plate is so sensitive that we do not want to touch the silica gel on the tlc plate with our bare hands so we have to protect the experiment from our skin not the other way around and you guys are sitting at home you can be watching this video while you're wearing sandals but no matter how hot it gets in the lab we always wear shoes we are never allowed to enter the labs with our sandals on another thing precaution that we want to take always avoid using contact lenses if you are wearing contacts we suggest that you invest in very good quality safety goggles and another thing whenever you come in the lab you make sure that area around you is hazard free there are no um backpacks in your leg space or things uh fallen apart that you do not trip on them right so these safety rules if you follow you will prevent any accidents from happening in the semester we'll do five labs all these labs are related to the lectures that you will be doing online with dr dawson or with dr vijaykun so first lab is amino acid lab and each lab is synchronized with your lecture you will study about the topic first and then we'll be dealing the lab second one is proteins then come the enzymes then lipids and finally the carbohydrates for each of these labs you will have a quiz and a write-up so the quiz will be posted on the course link as well and the write-up how you submit that will go over it when we come to that so about 13 will come from your write-ups and about 12 percent from all the quizzes so as we go through the semester you will see the notifications in the announcements or in the lab folder so make sure you check the course link regularly there are certain other rules that you need to follow when you come back to the building in your in probably hopefully next semester or so in the fall of 2021 if ever there is a fire alarm in this building you are supposed to take everything with you because we don't know whether it's just a drill or a real emergency so you should take all your belongings your backpack your keys your wallets your purses everything with you and then wait outside with your ta and then when the fire marshals come around and tell us to uh that it is safe to re-enter the building we do so okay and each lab is provided with many safety features for example if you see behind me this is a safety shower and this is a eye wash station god forbid if we spill something in our eyes or on us we have uh the safety shower and the eye wash station which run like this so it is this lab is very well equipped with other safety measures as well for example we have a first aid kit which in case we need we can use it if the need although i hope we never need it there is a spell kit as well which has all the acid and base absorbing material so in case of any spillage we have a proper spell kit there are certain other things that i want you to remember first and foremost the introductory chapter of the lab manual is posted on the course link so make sure you read it most of your questions will be answered when you read that chapter if you still have any question if you want any clarification you can email me at my email id jay carr at your work dot ca j k a u r at your wealth dot c a or you can email our common inbox which is buyok two five eight zero at your dot c and your the email addresses of your tas are also given to you or you can email them and get any clarification so read the introductory chapter it will answer most of your questions and if you have some time read the lab one as well but we'll come to it in the coming next week if you have an ses accommodation for anything please let me know by emailing me or let your tno although each lab is open for whole week so that you have ample of time monday to friday and each quiz you have unlimited uh attempts so everybody should be pretty set thank you very much
