Mar 31, 2025

Demonstration: Decomposition Reaction using Sodium Bicarbonate

Materials Needed

  • Sodium bicarbonate
  • Test tube
  • Test tube clamp
  • Bunsen burner
  • Wood splint
  • Water source (sink)

Procedure

  1. Prepare the Test Tube

    • Place a small amount of sodium bicarbonate in the test tube, about 2 cm high.
    • Fasten the test tube using a test tube clamp at a 30-degree angle, facing a wall.
    • Ensure the setup allows the Bunsen burner to fit underneath the test tube.
  2. Safety Precautions

    • Make sure the test tube is not pointed at anyone.
  3. Conduct the Reaction

    • Turn on the gas line and light the Bunsen burner.
    • Carefully position the Bunsen burner under the test tube.
  4. Observation

    • Look for any changes appearing on the walls of the test tube.
  5. Test for Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

    • Light a wood splint.
    • Insert the lit wood splint into the open end of the test tube.
    • If the flame goes out, CO2 presence is confirmed.
  6. Cleanup Procedure

    • Wash the test tube in the sink for the next group.
    • Run water over the used wood splint before disposal.

Key Points

  • The test tube must be heated by the Bunsen burner for testing CO2 efficiently.
  • Safety is crucial; always ensure proper handling and positioning of the test tube and burner.
