Lecture Notes: Writing a DBQ (Document-Based Question) Essay

Introduction

  • No fixed formula to achieve maximum points on a DBQ.
  • Different strategies can be employed, much like playing a game like Fortnite.
  • Flexibility: no set format in terms of number of paragraphs or structure.
  • Freedom can be overwhelming; a suggested formula is available for those who need structure.

Basic Structure of a DBQ Essay

Paragraph 1: Introduction

  • Start with Contextualization: 2-3 sentences with specific historical information relevant to the prompt.
  • End with a Thesis Statement:
    • Must be historically defensible.
    • Establish categories to structure body paragraphs (e.g., social, political, economic).

Body Paragraphs

  • Structure follows the "TEA" method (Topic Sentence, Evidence, Analysis).

Body Paragraph Example

  • Topic Sentence:
    • Summarizes the content of the paragraph, derived from the thesis.
  • Evidence:
    • Use documents as evidence, e.g., "Document 4 says..." (paraphrase in own words).
  • Analysis:
    • Demonstrate how the evidence supports the topic sentence and thesis.
    • Use phrases like "This shows..." or "This demonstrates...".

Additional Elements

  • Use at least four documents in your analysis (for more points, use all seven).
  • Source at least two documents:
    • Discuss the context or audience of the documents.
  • Include Evidence Beyond Documents:
    • Provide non-documented historical evidence that supports your argument.

Scoring

  • Following this format can yield 6 out of 7 points.
  • Complexity Point: Earned by using all documents or sourcing more than required.

Conclusion

  • The formula is a guideline to help approach the DBQ effectively.

  • Approach the DBQ with confidence using these strategies.
