Hi everyone! Today we are going to be making the bikini top for our mermaid tail. Here I have the mermaid tail we made in a separate video. I'll put the link in the description of this video for this mermaid tail. But I want to make the bikini top for this and they are going to be seashells.
So that this can be a cute photo prop for a baby on the beach. I think this is so cute. So a bikini top with seashells. I made a little seashell. little prototype here and I'll show you how to make it soon but this is what we're going to make we're going to make two of these and then we're going to chain strings to tie around so that this can be the bikini top and I'm making mine in bright orange you can choose whatever color you want I'm using red heart yarns and here is the label red heart super saver and medium size 4 yarn and I'm using bright orange and then I also am using, for the strings I'm going to use turquoise because I used turquoise in the tail of the mermaid so make sure that you have something equivalent and we are also using a size G hook which is 4.25 millimeters for the mermaid tail we use size J hook for this portion and then size H for the bottom portion for the tail part or for the fin so make sure you have those hooks handy but for this tutorial on this video we're going to be using the g-size hook the entire time and I just want to make sure I do mention we do have a Facebook page as well as a website where all of my crochet videos are make sure you hit that subscribe button so that you can get notifications on when I put new videos out I try to get one out every week so let's get started on making the shells for our bikini top for this baby mermaid cocoon.
I'm starting out with orange here and we're going to start out by making a slip knot. Let me just get some room around here so you can see everything. All right starting out with a slip knot we are going to put the short end over the long end and fold that down and take that string.
from the middle and pull that insert your hook and we're ready to go so on this bikini uh we are going to be making two of these i'm actually just going to show you one because i already have one made but then you can just rewind this video and make the second one very simple bikini top and then i'll show you how to make the chains to we're going to make it wrap around the abdomen part or the chest part around and then we're also going to be making a string for this one to come up and then on the other one another string to come up so they can tie behind the neck. So those will be our tasks today. So on this shell we are going to chain seven.
So yarn over and pull through one, two, three, four, five, six, and seven and then we are going to single crochet across so in the second chain from the hook so the loop that's on our hook never counts as anything so we're going to go one and two and you notice that I turned my chain from to the back because I like to work in the back ridges here it just is a clean edge you can work in this top loop here right there but I don't like to and so I'm going to work in the back ridges and just single crochet across and you'll have six single crochet so that's one, one, two, three, four 5 and 6 here all right going on to row number two we are going to chain one and we're working in the back loops only throughout the entire thing. So let me show you exactly what that means. We usually work through both loops.
I'll just show you one here. We usually work through both loops like this, but we are actually working through the back loops. Okay, so we're working in between.
We're going to go in between these V's here, in between them and go right to the back. Okay, so back loop only, alright, here and throughout. So we turned our work, working at the back, we chained up one, working on row two, we are going to single crochet in the first five stitches.
So make sure you crochet in that first stitch that we just chained up one in. Make sure you insert your hook right in that back loop and make a single crochet, so that's one, two. 3, 4, and 5 and we have one stitch left we are going to put two single crochets in that last stitch so put 1 and 2 okay so on this row you have 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 single crochet And going on to row number three, we're going to chain up one and turn our work. And again, working in the back loops only, we are going to put two single crochet in this first stitch. One and two.
Okay, so two single crochet in that first stitch, and then just single crochet once in each of the rest of the stitches across. Okay, so at the end of this row you should have eight single crochet, then chain up one and we're going to go on to row number four. And it says to single crochet in the first seven stitches.
So one, two, three, four. 5, 6, and 7 and we have one stitch left and it says to put two single crochets in that last stitch there so put two single crochets right in that same stitch just like that. Okay so you'll have one two three four five six seven eight nine single crochet at the end of this row.
Chain up one and turn your work. We're working on row number five. now and it says to put two single crochet in the first stitch again in the back loops only put two single crochet in there that's one and two both in the same stitch and then just single crochet across one single crochet in each stitch across Okay, so at the end of this row you should have 10 single crochet, then chain up 1, and going on to row number 6, we are going to single crochet in the first 9 stitches. So just put 1 single crochet in each of the first 9 stitches, remember back loops only. So 1, 2, 3. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 and we have one stitch left so we're going to put two single crochet in that last stitch remember back loop only two single crochet in that same stitch right there at the end of this row you'll have 11 single crochet then chain one and turn your work and we are working on row number seven and you want to put two single crochet in the first stitch here one and two and then one single crochet in each stitch all the way across remember back loops only and we are going to be having 12 single crochet at the end of this row all right then chain up one and turn your work working on see two four six row number eight we are just going to single crochet across no increasing here so back loops only just put one single crochet in each stitch all the way across because we are done increasing.
So you'll have a total of 12 single crochet at the end of this row and then we'll be decreasing on the next few rows. Okay, so chain one and turn your work. And now we are working on row number nine.
We are going to decrease now. Do a single crochet decrease. So working in the back loops only, we are going to insert our hook in the first stitch, yarn over and pull through, go directly into the second stitch, yarn over and pull through, and then yarn over and pull through all three loops on your hook.
That's a decrease. So we did a single crochet decrease. Now we are going to work one single crochet and the rest of the stitches across. So you'll have a total of 11 single crochet, including that decrease stitch on this row. Sierra two four six eight nine so row number ten Remember chain one turn your work row number ten We are going to single crochet in the first nine stitches in the back loops only one two three four five six seven 8, 9, and 10, and it looks like you have two stitches left, so you're going to decrease those two together.
Okay, and then row, let's see, so you'll have 10 single crochet all the way across. So now chain up one and turn your work. Row 11 says to do a decrease single crochet.
So remember, insert your hook, yarn over, pull through, go directly into the next stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through all three loops. That's a decrease. Then do one single crochet in the rest of the stitches across, which is eight.
So you'll have a total of nine single crochet at the end of this row. All right, chain up one, turn your work, and then row 12 says to single crochet in the first seven stitches. So one, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Am I missing something? Let's see here.
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12. Hmm. Maybe I counted wrong. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Yes, I counted wrong.
Okay, then in the last two stitches, just single crochet those last two together. Alright, then chain up one, and row number 13, we're going to single crochet two together. One and two.
Okay, so we single crocheted those two together. Then we're going to single crochet across, and there should be six stitches left. One, two, three.
4, 5, 6, yep I did mess up. If you mess up like I did, just single crochet across. There's no big deal.
Chain up 1. Turn your work and 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13. So row 14 says to single crochet in the first five stitches and remember back loops only. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. I'm going to single crochet in six because I have an extra stitch somehow and just single crochet the last two stitches together so do a decrease over those last two like that and then row 14 says to chain one and turn your work and then 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, yep, we have to decrease. So decrease the first two stitches like that. And then single crochet across.
Okay, then chain 1. And now we're done decreasing. So now we're just going to single crochet across for the last row. which is row 15. One, two, three, four, five, and six. Alright.
And then we're going to fasten off. So chain up one, I usually do, and cut my yarn and pull that through. Okay, now I'm going to sew in my ends and then I will show you how to make this bottom portion and shape it so it comes in.
Alright, so this is our piece so far. It looks fabulous. So now we are going to be working on this edge here and what we're going to do is actually turn it upside down like that and we're going to be working in the rows. So there's 15 rows here 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 and well 15 16 but we're gonna be working in that middle row right there so whatever Okay, so start with a slip knot, okay, and if you don't know how to make a slip knot there are other ways to do that or other videos to show you and what we need to do is get our pattern up so we can see This pattern is provided by K-Factor stitches. I can put the link in the description on to her pattern It's a shell bikini pattern.
So I'll put the link if you want to read the written pattern, it's a free pattern. So insert your hook on the edge which is between the row, so it's right here. Okay, so we're inserting our hook right there and just make a slip stitch, okay, and then chain one. Alright, and now we are going to double crochet three together five times across Okay, so we are going to yarn over insert our hook where we just chained up yarn over and pull through Yarn over and pull through two and then hold it Yarn over and go into the next row.
So at the bottom of the next row Yarn over and pull through and then yarn over and pull through two and then yarn over Okay, so hold those three on your hook yarn over go into the next row And then yarn over and pull through and then yarn over and pull through two Then hold, so that's one, two, three, and oh, that's three, okay, I'm sorry. So yes, we are going to yarn over and pull through all three of those, or all four of those. There's that fourth loop. So that's... three together so do it another one in this next row here yarn over and go into that row yarn over and pull through yarn over and pull through two then hold those two loops on your hook yarn over and go into the next row yarn over and pull through yarn over and pull through two then yarn over and go into the next row yarn over and pull through yarn over and pull through two.
So now you have four loops on your hook you're gonna yarn over and pull through all four loops. Alright moving on yarn over go into the next row, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through two, yarn over go into the next row, yarn over and pull through. yarn over and pull through two yarn over go into the next row yarn over pull through yarn over pull through two then yarn over and pull through all three loops on your hook okay we have to do this twice more it said to do five so we did one two and three yarn over go into the next row yarn over pull through yarn over pull through two Yarn over, go into the next row, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through two, yarn over, go into the next row, yarn over and pull through, yarn over, pull through two, and then you have four loops on your hook, so you're going to yarn over and pull through all four of those.
Okay, then yarn over. Go into the next row, yarn over and pull through, yarn over pull through two, yarn over go into the next row, yarn over pull through, yarn over pull through two, and yarn over and go into the very last row. Yarn over pull through, yarn over pull through two, yarn over pull through all four loops, there you go. Alright, there we go.
Now it says to chain two and turn the work. So now we're looking at here. We have five stitches.
One, two, three, four, and five. And it says to put a half double crochet in the first two stitches. So just one half double crochet.
One and then one. And then in the middle stitch here, this is the next stitch, we're going to put three half double crochets. One, two, and three.
And then we're just going to put one half double crochet in the last two stitches. Okay, like that. Then it says to chain two and turn your work. So we're looking at the front now and it says to put three half double crochets in that first stitch right here. One, two, and three all in the same stitch.
And then it says to half double crochet once in the next five stitches. So just put one half double crochet in the next five stitches. So that's one, two, three, four, and five. And it looks like you only have one stitch left, so you have to put three half double crochets in that last stitch. One, two, and three.
Okay, then we're going to fasten off, so I just chain up one and cut my yarn, and then I'm going to sew in my ends, and I'll meet you back up when we are about to make the straps. Alright, so once you have, just rewind this video to make the second one. These are going to be exactly the same, so if you need to, you know, look back and make two of these, and then set those aside.
And we are going to make the strap that goes around the bottom, around the torso part of the baby, and then we are going to make the straps that come off of here. So let's start actually with one of these, and I'm going to be making my straps in this turquoise yarn because my tail is turquoise, so I want it to match. You can use whatever color you want, it doesn't matter, but we are going to make the straps.
So what I want to start with, we are going to be using the same G size hook, which is 4.25 millimeters. So you can use something equivalent. It's the same size hook we used to make these shells. So let's get started.
We're going to start with a slip knot. And then insert your hook. and we are actually going to attach it right to the top of this shell right here. Just make a slip knot or a slip stitch, I'm sorry, like that.
Okay, so it's attached and we'll sew this in later, but we are going to chain 50. So yarn over and pull through. So that's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. So just make sure you go to 50 and then I'll meet you back up when I have my 50 chains. Alright, so I have my 50 chains here and then to fasten off I usually chain one more, you don't have to, but chain one more, cut the yarn and pull that all the way through and then pull that tight. So that is secure. Okay, so that's our first side and we're going to sew in these ends later.
Now onto the second one, we're going to do the same exact thing to our second shell, so remember do a slip knot. and then slip stitch it to the top like that okay and then chain 50 so I'll meet you back up when I have this done all right so I have my 50 chains so I'm just going to fasten off here exactly how we did with her the other one Okay, so now we have this so far. And now we are going to make a chain for this part here.
So we're actually going to do this separately, so we're not going to attach it to this, so you can just set those aside right now. And make a slip knot. Okay, and then chain 150 chains. So 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. And just continue until you get 150 chains.
And then to fasten off, we are just going to pull that through, cut your yarn, and pull that all the way through. So, and then you'll have something that looks like this. I already made it off camera, so.
I have mine done already, so just make sure you make 150 chains, then fasten off, pull that yarn all the way through, so this is what you should have. And now, once you have your chain of 150, we are going to take a yarn needle, like this, and put the yarn on our needle. And we are going to take our little bikini top here, the shells. And we are going to go through the stitches that we did after the decreases. So you see the five double crochet three togethers here, and then we did one half double crochet, one half double crochet, then three half double crochets, then one half double crochet, and then one half double crochet.
And that was on row 17 of the shell. We are going to be weaving this in and out of those stitches. Just like that, okay, and then make sure nothing gets tangled. I'm all discombobulated here.
All right, and then going into the very next one right next to it, so make sure you know which one is the right side and which one is the left side. Let me see here. Oops, you know what?
This one is my right side. Oh no, it's the left side. Okay, that's the left side.
This is the right side. Okay. And then we're just going to weave in and out of this one.
Okay, and then make sure that you make them even and you know stretch them out so that they are even. Oh wow, okay. Make sure your string is even on both sides. Okay, and then stretch it out.
Like that. Okay. And then for the ends, we don't want these ugly little stragglers hanging off, so we are going to cut them shorter to make them cleaner.
just like that so that's clean edging okay and then make sure that your chain see how this is the back ridges you want to make sure that the chain is actually toward the front so you might have to twist your chain a little bit to make it There we go. So now you see the front of the chain is not so twisted and it looks good. Okay, now as for these stragglers, we want to sew those in. So what I usually do, I'll just show you this one and then I'll let you to it, is I just go weave it in and out of those chains to a good enough height like that.
And then I go back down and weave them in and out. And go down the back, pull that tight, and trim that. Okay, so you can do that for all of the straps, and then I will meet you back up when we are all finished. Alright, so there you have it, our bikini top for our mermaid tail.
