This lesson covers the verb venir, to come, which is of course, as the title suggests, also irregular in the preterite. In the present tense we have Yo vengo, tú vienes, él viene, ella viene, usted viene, nosotros venimos, nosotras venimos, ellos vienen, ellas vienen, ustedes vienen. Some examples. Mis amigos no vienen a la escuela. Su novia viene con Alejandro.
Now, in the preterite. Yo vine. Tú viniste. Él vino.
Ella vino. Usted vino. Nosotros vinimos.
Nosotras vinimos. Ellos vinieron. Ellas vinieron.
Ustedes vinieron. Those examples again. Mis amigos no vienen a la escuela. My friends don't come to school.
Mis amigos no vinieron a la escuela. My friends didn't come to school. Su novia viene con Alejandro. His girlfriend comes with Alejandro. Su novia vino con Alejandro.
His girlfriend came with Alejandro. As I go over all of these videos on the irregulars, it's probably also important for me to point out that whenever a verb has a prefix onto it and it contains one of these irregular verbs, that verb will also follow the same pattern. Okay?
So for venir, for example, there is a verb that has the prefix pre in front of it, P-R-E. Prevenir means to prevent. Okay?
So it's conjugated the exact same way as venir. It just has a P-R-E in front of every form. For example, in the preterite, I I prevented, you prevented, he prevented, she prevented, we prevented, they prevented, etc. would be, yo previne, tu previniste, el previno, ella previno, usted provino, nosotros previnimos, ellos previnieron, ellas previnieron, ustedes previnieron.
Okay, so the idea is that in any verb, this is the rule. I might eventually put some lists somewhere on the site for you guys so you can see that. Now, how about you change this from the present to the preterite?
El viene. Él vino. Nosotros venimos.
Nosotros vinimos. Ella viene. Ella vino. Ellos vienen. Ellos vinieron.
Yo vengo. Yo vine. ¿Tú vienes?
Tú viniste. ¿Juan viene? Juan vino. ¿Nosotras venimos? Nosotras vinimos.
Okay, now translate the following into English. Pause the video if you need more time. Check the word bank and verb conjugation below the video if you also need more help. Good luck!
I came to the party. Yo vine a la fiesta. No one came to biology class. Nadie vino a la clase de biología.
Did you come yesterday? ¿Viniste ayer? Juan came to the dance with Maria. Juan vino al baile con Maria.
José and Víctor didn't come home. José y Víctor no vinieron a casa. Hopefully that was fácil, or easy. Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about this video.
Gracias y adiós.
