hi everyone Etienne is here and in this video we will explore what is Atkinson and Shiffrin memory model have you ever wondered how we form memories in this video we will discover exactly how if this is your first time on this channel then make sure you subscribe and hit the bell icon to get updates on my latest videos about time management and productivity the Atkinson and Shiffrin model also known as multi-store model is a model of memory proposed in 1968 by richard atkinson and richard Shiffrin the model states that human memory has three separate components sensory memory short-term memory and long-term memory the first component is sensory memory during every moment of life sensory information is being taken in by sensory receptors and processed by the nervous system there are three main types of sensory memory iconic memory that registers through visual stimuli echoic memory that registers throughout the turi system and haptic memory that registers through touch sensory information is stored in sensory memory just long enough to be transferred to short-term memory the second component is a short-term memory short-term memory is the capacity for holding a small amount of information in mind in an active readily available state for the short period of time when it comes to short-term memory there are two things to keep in mind and that is duration and capacity information kept in short-term memory will be stored for approximately 20 to 30 seconds before it's either forgotten or stored in a long-term memory when it comes to short-term memory capacity the magic number seems to be 7 plus or minus 2 and it is also known as channel capacity the third component is a long-term memory long-term memory refers to the information stored in your brain over an extended period of time it can store a seemingly unlimited amounts of information almost indefinitely I hope that you enjoy this video and I was able to give you a quick overview of what Atkinson and Shiffrin memory model is and how you process your information if you enjoy this video I've really appreciate if you could press the like button as this will help the video reach more people and spread the message
