Overview of Female Reproductive System

chapter 28 lecture five is the female reproductive system overview female reproductive system consists of the gonads which are paired ovaries little almond shaped almond-sized organs they produce the secondary oocytes or eggs as well as hormones the uterine tubes also called the fallopian tubes are going to transport the fertilized ova so here we have the ovary and then the uterine or fallopian tube it transports it into the uterus and that's where fetal development occurs then we have the vagina and the external genitalia which consists of the man's pubis which is this fat pad right in front of the pubic symphysis the labium majora the labia minora the clitoris which is piece of erectile tissue that's homologous to the penis all of these are part of the external genitalia the vagina and the external genitalia constitute the vulva and then we have the mammary glands that produce milk now just one word about the um these words labia mages labia minus and and the same with the erectile tissue in the male the corpora cavernosa penis and the corpus spongy oats and penis um if it ends in um it's singular if it ends in a it's plural so the labia majora is referring to both of the outer lips the labia minora is referring to both since this is a sagittal section we're only looking at one so it's called labium mages and labium minus the same is true with the erectile tissue in the male system the corpura cavernosa penis is ends in an a because it's plural there's two of them the chord plus spongiosum ends in um because there's one okay so the ovaries are paired glands they are developmentally homologous to the testes these are the female gonads they're located in the upper pelvic cavity on either side of the uterus and like the uterus they're maintained and positioned by a series of ligaments this is a somewhat confusing photograph so let's go over here and make sure we understand how we're looking at it there's a transverse plane and the view is looking downward so here's the uterus here are the ovaries and this is the fallopian or uterine tube these are intestines all around here okay and the urinary bladder is over here so this is the anterior this is the posterior you can see we've got the round ligament we've got the broad ligament the mesovarium sorry the mesovarium is here broad ligament is over in here there's also the cardinal ligament the uterus sacral ligament it's over in there um all these ligaments are help holding all this in place and we'll we'll see the ovarian ligament a little bit better in another another view but all of these are going to help to hold the uterus in place help to hold the ovaries in place as women get older particularly women who've had a lot of children sometimes they can suffer from uterine prolapse and we'll talk about that later but it comes from these ligaments not holding the uterus in place the way they should the goals for lecture five are to listen to describe the parts of the female reproductive system and that's it
