before we go and look at painting in detail we can of course develop our judgment skills just judging a distance estimating a Distance by looking on the ground some of us do that because we're used to play football we know a football field is 100 meters long maybe you're a sprinter maybe used to swim 25 meter lengths 50 m lengths so that's another skill that we can develop looking at pacing in detail most people if we count a double step in other words what we're going to do is only count every time say our left foot touches the ground and for 100 meters then that for most people is around 60 Paces but could be as low as 56 57 and could be as much as nearly 70 it really depends on how long your legs are what footwear you're wearing how what time of day it is later in the day people tend to take shorter Paces than when they set off first thing in the morning so we'll have a look at that so what I'm going to do is I'm going to walk very steadily just a normal walking pace there's no funny walks or strides or anything like that and I going to count every time my right foot touches the ground so it's easy I just set off with my left so one 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 57 58 59 there we are so I've taken 59 Paces there to cover 100 meters pretty well flat ground if I head up the hill it my number of Paces will increase because you take shorter Paces coming downhill is less accurate because some people in muddy conditions you'll take short paces and fairly gentle slope nice and dry conditions you could take very long Paces so it'll vary enormously downhill 76 there we are so 77 on that descent down there um so saving myself from slipping on my backs side so that's pacing in its simplest form it's very accurate for short distances do remember that it's 10% inaccurate and therefore if you're going to go for something like 300 M if you don't find what you're looking for after 300 M you've got this 10% at the back of your head to think well I'll go another 30 m to see if I can find what I'm looking for uh otherwise then you need to start some sort of search pattern the uh counting Paces is quite antisocial and uh you should be counting in your head probably we have various methods of recording so if you're going to go say 300 M then every time I've count 159 Paces I can just hold up a finger and I can add on 200 300 and so on I could pick up a pebble every time I do it 100 MERS um I can use beads some people have beads on the compass every time they do 100 meters they slide a bead up that's 100 that's 200 that's 300 and so on so there's a number of ways of recording it it's very easy to lose track if somebody suddenly asks you a question so that's why we need to make sure we know how many hundreds we've done [Music]
