hey future pharmacy techs let's dive into the world of medical terminology a crucial aspect of our profession in the next few videos we'll have a look at understanding the different parts of medical terminology becoming familiar with General Pharmacy abbreviations and how they are used and also getting to know the different Sig codes and routes of administration first up let's understand the different parts of a medical term the roots are the building blocks of medical terms and identifies the major meaning of the term for instance arter refers to the artery while cardi relates to the heart on to prefixes these attach to the beginning of root words adding specific meanings take anti meaning against as an antibiotic lastly to the end we have suffixes they're attached to the end of root words altering the meaning for example itis indicates inflammation like in ritis some medical terms have all three of these parts while some have one or two here are some more examples of root words think about where you have heard or seen these root words in your life Derma meaning skin like when you go to the dermatologist hemo for blood a common term for this is hemoglobin Arthur meaning joints you may know someone with arthritis which is an inflammation of the joints gluco meaning sugar and used in glucose optham means eyes and cardi refers to Heart let's look at some other examples of prefixes again there is a more extensive set of examples in the classroom with flash cards first up we have anti- meaning against Brady referring to slow then hyper which means above in contrast to hypo which means below also macro meaning large and lastly poly referring to many before we go to example of how prefixes roots and suffixes come together to create medical terms let's run through some examples of suffixes remember that there is a more expansive list provided in the classroom with flash cards there's Alia which means pain and emia indicating blood condition a group of suffixes eia ISM and I refers to pertaining to the suffix means tumor sclerosis indicates hardening and lastly Uria meaning urine let's try to break down this word osteoarthritis the root here is Arthur this root means joint the prefix is Osteo which indicates relation to the bones and the suffix is itis which relates to inflammation so osteoarthritis mean an infation of the joints now you give it a try can you identify the root prefix and suffix of this word so the root here is cardi which refers to the heart heart and the prefix Brady means slow the suffix is e which means pertaining to Brady cardia means a slow heart indicating a heart condition in which the heart beats slowly let's try another one how about the word hyperglycemia can you break this down the root of this word is a bit different the root as presented in this word is Gleek but this comes from the actual root gluco meaning sugar the prefix is hyper which means above and the suffix emia pertains to the blood when we put all these parts together we get hyperglycemia which refers to having high levels of glucose or sugar in the blood and there you have it a snapshot of understanding medical terminology continue Along on your journey to becoming top-notch pharmacy techs by viewing the next videos on General abbreviations and Sig codes
