I'm back. Should you be able to roll on your first day of jiu-jitsu? Here's what I think. If you have no prior grappling, wrestling, judo experience, then answer is no. You shouldn't be able to roll immediately. But here's the catch. You don't need to wait 6 months or, you know, until blue belt to start rolling. Most gyms have a structure. Most in the beginning, we focus on very simple positional training. We start with easy tasks like passing the guard or holding the mouth or defending from a specific position. Think of it like learning the rules before jumping into a game. You wouldn't play soccer, basketball, or any other sport without knowing the rules, right? On your first day or even your first month, you don't really know what you're supposed to do, you know, in a real fight. That's why positional training is crucial. It teaches you what to do step by step. Once you understand the rules and goals, then you can start rolling safely. mostly safely. Some gyms let beginners roll day one, and if that's their style, that's fine. But it's a quick way to get injured and often a poor first to experience getting the [ __ ] kicked out of you without understanding what's happening. So, be patient, master the basics first, and then step onto the mat ready to roll safely and confidently. Your long-term progress, and your body will thank you.
