Angle's Classification of Malocclusion

Overview

  • Edward H. Angle classified malocclusion using the relationship between the first molars of both arches.
  • Key factor: positioning and occlusion of molars.

Classes of Malocclusion

Normal Occlusion

  • Mesobuccal cusp of the upper first molar occludes with the buccal groove of the lower first molar.

Class I Malocclusion

  • Similar to normal occlusion.
  • Characterized by:
    • Crowding
    • Rotations
    • Positional irregularities

Class II Malocclusion

  • Mesobuccal cusp of the upper first molar occludes anterior to the buccal groove of the lower first molar.

  • Two subtypes:

    Class II Division 1
    • Upper incisors are tilted outwards (protruded).
    • Causes a significant overjet.
    • Overjet: Horizontal distance between upper and lower central incisors.
    Class II Division 2
    • Upper incisors are retroclined.
    • Causes an increased overbite.
    • Overbite: Vertical relationship between upper and lower central incisors.

Class III Malocclusion

  • Mesobuccal cusp of the upper first molar occludes posterior to the buccal groove of the lower first molar.

Conclusion

  • Understanding these classifications helps in diagnosing and planning treatments for dental malocclusions.
