[Music] shalom and welcome to via hafta israel a hebrew phrase which means you shall love israel we hope you'll stay with us for the next 30 minutes as our teacher dr baruch shares his expository teaching from the bible dr baruch is the senior lecturer at the zehra avraham institute based in israel although all courses are taught in hebrew at the institute dr baruch is pleased to share this weekly address in english to find out more about our work in israel please visit us on the web at loveisreal.org that's one word loveisreal.org now here's baruch with today's lesson when you hear the terms righteousness justice what comes into your mind well if your thoughts are formed by prophetic truth then when you hear righteousness and justice you are going to associate these things with the kingdom of god and not just the kingdom of god but god himself with the messiah because messiah's rule in the kingdom of god is to manifest justice and righteousness we see that throughout the prophetic revelation we are also going to see that messiah he is going to rule meaning he is going to impose his authority a wise person embraces that right now we choose to submit we desire to obey we want to bring ourself under his authority and in doing so god will supply to us the anointing of the spirit whereby we can be an instrument for those things for truth for righteousness for justice those things that are necessary for the glory of god to be manifested and as always there is that close connection that inherent relationship this strong linking together god's rule and righteousness and justice well take out your bible and look with me to the book of isaiah and chapter 32. now this chapter is going to show two things which are very much in opposition we are going to see good things that are manifested because of god's rule his will and then we're going to see things that are not good because individuals cities nations peoples are rejecting god's authority they are not submitting to his truth so these two things are going to be manifested back and forth as we go through our study of isaiah 32 one word concerning the the language of this text we find that it's it's not easily understood the language can be difficult at times not only from a vocabulary standpoint but primarily because of how it's arranged it's arranged in a very choppy in a very direct and not a smooth flow but one that simply puts we might say bullet points in front of the readers so again look with me too where we are going to begin isaiah chapter 32 and verse 1. we read that familiar word for behold this is announcing a revelation there is announcing a truth that is going to be experience word says behold for righteousness will rule a king so there is a coming king that he will rule it's in the future it's a kingdom prophecy a king will rule for righteousness and obviously this king is messiah secondly we see the second phrase here is the word sarim which in modern hebrew relates to those who have a high position in the government we would say a cabinet official so here as we continue on it says these cabinet officials these rulers with messiah for justice they will officiate they're going to serve they're going to be part of his government for the same purpose justice and righteousness now if we're wise we are going to want to express these things in our life and in order to do so we must embrace god's standards for justice and righteousness and what we're going to see in this passage of scripture and what we see with our own eyes today is that more and more governments nations people the the perspective from the worldly point of view are in oppositions to what god says is righteous and what god says is just and this only foreshadows a coming conflict a conflict between the disciples of messiah and those who are are part of this world meaning committed to the prince of this world and his purposes i'm speaking about our enemy satan move on to verse two and a man will be now this man that will be is messiah and it's talking about a definition how we understand him and we know that the scripture says that god is a very present help in times of trouble and this what is being expressed concerning messiah where it says and a man will will be as a hiding place literally for a wind now a wind would be a tempest oftentimes wind can be very destructive as in a tornado so this man in the midst of that which is dangerous that which could cause destruction that which would want to be avoided he's going to be our hiding place and secondly we read something that's very similar this is prophecy but it's also poetic we have the word heidi place and then we have a word for a secret place and this means something that is is hidden as well that which is not visible so likewise we also see in a hidden place for and we have the word for a a flood or a current and this is something that just sweeps through and as well causes destruction so messiah he's going to be a help for us he will be a hiding place a secret place in difficult times when we have the winds blow and the flood waters come but it also says not only is he going to be a protection but it's also that he's going to be a provision where it says like streams of water in arid place like the shade of a heavy rock in a wary or or tired land meaning this he is going to be a defense for us he is going to shelter us hide us he is going to position us near provision he is going to be our defense in a land that is not conducive a land that is not favorable so all of this speaks and gives us assurance that in difficult times we can indeed find help in him that he will not leave us nor nor abandon us but his help will be a present reality verse 3 and not clothes are the eyes of the one who cease now it's speaking here about individuals that reject that deny that close their eyes to this revelation that do not want to see the truth so under his rule there's going to be a change so they're not going to close the eyes from seeing nor the ears of hearing ears that hear they will listen and this all goes back to the fact that when messiah's ruling when he is manifesting his character his provision what he's about people that were were were not paying attention we're not perceiving it didn't want to listen there's going to be a change there is going to be a remnant that embraces god's perspective and god's revelation verse verse 4 and the impetuous heart now the word that i translated impetuous is a word for fast and what this word to be impenetralist means is to be rash in making decisions not to take everything into consideration not to be prudent so we're speaking about a change a heart that was was quick to make rash decisions it says this type of heart will understand and will know and the tongue that that once stuttered didn't convey things clearly did not present things in a way that was easily understood here it says and quickly will this tongue speak and it's a word for just that that which is clear that which is understood that which brings clarity to a situation so again and again we see a change why one reason because this king is ruling it's the outcome of what we can expect when messiah rules and the message of this text is that he should be ruling over your heart he should be the one that determines how you think and one who thinks properly as we're going to see is going to behave properly verse verse 5. no longer will be called the foolish one generous now these two words the first one foolish one and the second one has to do with with abundance it's literally the word for for being generous and here's the thing foolishness causes us not to participate in the things of god so this one who's foolish he's not going to be called generous meaning this he's not going to any longer be seen as someone who's investing himself properly when it says foolish he's not interested in the things of the kingdom he's not about the purposes of god he's involved in other things and he's committed to that but he's not going to be seen as hard-working he's not going to be seen as someone who is invested in that which is good nor will and this is word for a miser someone who's stingy someone who's who's cheap it says he will not be thought of it won't be said concerning him that he's bountiful that he is someone that that has resources why because what he does how he acquired things was through holding them for himself rather than extending and giving them to those who are in need so there's going to be based upon his rule there's going to be a change in perspective how ones are thought about no longer are those who are foolish going to be seen in a positive way no longer are those who are stingy withholding are they going to be thought of as someone who is rich or a possessor of things it's going to be recognized from how they truly are from god's god's vantage point verse 6. and here's what's to be expected for it's the same word for the foolish one foolishness he will speak meaning there is going to be a recognition that he is foolish and what he is saying how he is speaking what he's revealing about himself is indeed foolish and his heart makes evil or wickedness now notice one who is foolish not embracing the truth of god not making wise decision one who is stingy holding back not wanting to invest in the things of god it's going to be seen that this one look carefully this one is going to be recognized as speaking foolishness and his heart is going to make this is what he's pursuing this is what he's committed to that which the hebrew word oven that which is wicked to make and the word honest better understood as he will make that which is defiled and he will speak to the lord that which is deceitful and he will will empty the hungry meaning this instead of seeing someone who is hungry and remember what messiah said about this someone is hungry we feed them but here it's going to take the hungry one and make it empty he's not going to provide he's not going to respond and the thirsty one a drink for the thirsty he's going to also withhold there will be a shortage he will not provide and in essence what it's saying is this this one is not going to be interested in setting things in order giving drink to the thirsty and giving sustenance for those who who are hungry this is not what they're going to be about they're not about meeting needs but messiah he's going to bring a change to all of that and that's why if messiah is ruling your life you are going to be interested committed to invested in the the plights of others alleviating their suffering ministering to them look now to verse 7. it begins with one who is behaving adversely one who has rogued in his his uh commitments he is not faithful to what he should be doing he's not obedient to the tasks that he's been given so this is i think some bibles translated with the word scoundrel one who is simply not proper so a a rogue man a scoundrel his vessels meaning what he possesses they are evil and he he counseled schemes in order to harm and this is the word for poor ones or humble ones those who don't have much he's going to try to take advantage of he's got schemes to oppress them and take from them what he has or those who are humble those who not uh step out for themselves defend themselves he's going to see that and exploit that for his benefit this is what a scoundrel one who is in opposition to what he should be doing he wants to harm and his words are words of falseness and it says and when speaks a destitute one this is the word evilne evil is someone who has absolutely nothing he is destitute and even when this desert one his words are are just proper he in the context says he stands in opposition why the message is these people are contrary always they are never about helping they never want to bless they never take interest in anyone else it's always about themselves and this is a satanic character satan doesn't care who he harms in his pursuits he doesn't care what what suffering pain disaster death comes about for him to achieve his goals he's only committed to himself this is what's being described here look now to verse eight but a true generous one this is the same word that appeared earlier one who is truly generous generosity and it's in the plural generous things he will counsel and he will rise up he will take a stand for these generous things meaning not only is he going to recognize them but he's going to be committed to them so again what this this chapter chapter 32 of isaiah is doing is showing us a dichotomy a contrast between two very opposed approaches to life and what's the difference one thing messiah's rule if one is embracing the authority of messiah he makes very different decisions behaves very differently from those that that rejected and we see there's a contrast between one who knows understanding one who understands justice and righteousness and one who does not listen his eyes are closed to that why because he's pursuing his own schemes in order to harm others verse 9. now in verse 9 there's going to be an emphasis for a few verses on women and as i say frequently when women are at the forefront of a passage it speaks about redemption the consequence of redemption or the consequences of a lack of redemption so now we're going to speak of women and notice how they're just spoken of here it says nasheem note what's this well most bibles and i would agree with this this wording complacent women women who are relaxed they are still they are quiet why they're not burdened they're not upset about the status quo which is one of wickedness those things that are in conflict with the rule of god what his authority brings about so they're still they're calm they're at ease with the world in its present state so he says complacent women rise up listen to my voice oh daughters daughters and it's another word which means trusting but in this context it means trusting in the things of the world those things that that belong to a worldly perspective he's saying you need to rise up you need to change because this is not going to lead to where you need to be what ultimately you're going to want so he says also listen to my word here word is in the sense of revelation instruction so he's saying you can't be relaxed in the midst of these things why days upon years what that means is in a little bit more than a year there's time for change there's time for action but things are coming towards a key timing things are going to be different in a little bit more than a year and therefore he says in a little bit more of a year these ones who are complacent these ones who are trusting in the status quo they're going to be and the word here is that they're going to be disturbed what he's saying is this those who just are living right now just going along with the way that the things the world is with the things of the world they are going to be very shortly greatly disturbed for the end of the the harvest now this is the great harvest and it's saying the great heart the grape harvest has come to an end meaning grapes this joy that you have in the things of this world this complacentness that you have in the status of quo of how the world is being administered this time of of ease and joy and happiness not being burdened for the things of of god this is about to come to an end that which is gathered up once again the gleanings we might say from the the great harvest they will will not come meaning there's going to be a dramatic end very shortly god's not going to tolerate it anymore now there are those today that are eating rejoicing making mary rejoicing in the things of this world they're complacent but what's going to happen this prophecy is saying a change is coming a very dramatic change why a king will rule and this king is not about the status quo he's not going to embrace or tolerate this this world in its present form change is coming this is what he's saying verse 11. now we have a word for great great fear it's the modern hebrew word for being in in medical shock something happens to your body you see something and your body goes through a a physical change medical attention is needed so it's a word of great great fear and he says to these these women you need to fear you're going to be in shock oh oh women at ease or relax you're going to be it says be disturbed oh complacent once and he says strip off be naked and gird yourself around the loins now all of this is meaning take off your current garments and put on sackcloth there is now in a little more of a year it's going to happen so now is a time to repent now is the time to mourn over the unrighteousness the injustice in this world the foolishness of this world and how the world invests in the wrong things committed to the wrong things so realize a king is coming he is going to rule for righteousness and justice and now is your last call in order to to put on sackcloth and repent verse 12. upon breasts lament and this is simply an expression too to beat your chest it's an idiom it goes along with mourning great sorrow grief and repentance that's all it's saying in verse 12 upon breasts lament upon the desirable fields that good land that which was very prosperous for you he says upon that that good that desirable land meaning you need to mourn for that because things are changing also he says because of the fruitful vine all of this this prosperous land these fruitful vines all of this is going to be done away with why when god's righteous king comes he's coming for judgment discipline and all these things that were a source of joy a source of provision how you became wealthy all of that is going to dramatically and drastically change that's what he's informing the reader verse 13 upon the ground of my people and then we have two words cots shamir and this is thorn thistle now most will say thorn and thistle but it's a a thistle that is very sharp or authority so upon the ground instead of this ground being fertile this ground being conducive to be sown and produced god is going to make the land full of of thorns it's going to have thistles which are sharp this is going to come up in the land for upon every house of joy and every city of and it's a synonym for also gladness or joy or rejoicing so god's judgment is coming the land is going to suffer in every home and every village or city a home that was experiencing joy happiness having the so-called good life cities of of prosperity of gladness all of that is going to come to a a stopping and it's going to happen because god's going to bring a righteous change that which is a just change into the world verse 14 for the palace and this can be a king's palace or it can simply be a very beautiful estate so it says the palace or the estate of the the wealthy will be abandoned people just leave that and the the bustling city is going to be forsaken the mound and this is the term for building up land so it's higher in order to put a watchtower so in hebrew the word ophel va vachan has to do with land that's built up to place a watchtower on it it says it will be for a den forever it says it's not going to be used for its attendant purpose it's going to be dealt with severely it's going to become a joy and it's the same word for a joyful house in this verse well now we see or the previous verse is going to be for the joy of of uh mules or donkeys it's going to be for a pastor of of herds meaning wild animals are going to come there and make their home because human beings will not be inhabiting this place all of this foreshadows god's contempt for the corruption of his land of his people remember where we began look at verse 13 it says concerning the ground of my people this is talking about israel and we know something israel was forsaken when we look at the the roman captivity that took place with the destruction of the second temple in 70 a.d israel the people were scattered they left the land cities of great wealth cities that were known as as places of joy these cities became desolate but what's happening in our days things are changing they're being rebuilt they're taking the same names and this is a sign that we're moving towards justice the rule of a righteous just king verse 15. until now we're talking about a change that's going to happen he's speaking primarily to israel the people of judah and he says until will be poured out upon us a spirit from from up on high so god's spirit it's going to be poured out upon individuals and here we're talking about a personal spirit him the holy spirit to be poured out upon people there is coming a time of refreshing for the jewish people for the land of israel this is where this passage is going so this is going to be a desolate city a desolate land a place of thorn and fissile but it's only going to be until the word olam a long time meaning forever but there's going to be an interruption the implication is if god didn't act nothing would change this change of land it could have been forever but there's going to be brought a change until is poured out upon us a spirit from up on high and it will be a desert a fertile or a a fruitful land it's word carmel which speaks about a land that is elevated in desire rich fertile good prosperous it will be thought of as a forest meaning that is going to have abundant of trees now a forest is full of trees but when we're talking about a land that is sown as a forest meaning it's going to be plentiful all the crops all the trees that are there that are fruit producing this is the change that justice and righteousness brings about verse 16 and will dwell in the desert justice and righteousness in the carmel this this this good land justice and righteousness will dwell in it he also says verse 17 and it will come about the work of righteousness shalom meaning this the deeds of righteousness will bring about shalom a fulfillment of god's will and what is that blessing likewise says the working of righteousness what will bring about a true quietness what's important is this it uses a different word for being relaxed being at ease stillness quietness and this change of vocabulary is important so the works of righteousness will produce quietness and security and this time it means just that security or safety for ever verse 18 my people they will dwell in a an oasis of peace in dwelling places that are sure and in and here's the phrase a a rest and it's in the plural now it's hard to translate rest in the plural in english but what is referring to is an abundant rest and then we have a word that was used earlier for complacent but this time it's it's the idea of tranquility we are going to know and dwell in a place of abundant rest and tranquility and what is this referring to the kingdom of god verse 19. now notice that there's ending in this chapter the same dichotomy we know when when the book of revelation speaks about the kingdom of god it talks about those in the city the new jerusalem and those outside the new jerusalem that are cast outside the city in darkness where there is is gnashing of teeth and weeping and this is how isaiah ends this 32nd chapter he says in hell and prophetically we're talking about hell as god's judgment we saw that in egypt that one of the plagues were a plague of hell well these are these plague of hell hail storms or hailstones that are falling of of sulfur and fire so it says and hail will fall down come down upon the the force and in the lowland the city will be humble so it speaks about god's judgment on certain places but he says look at verse 20 but you shall be blessed or you shall be happy it's the same word that in the hebrew new testament the concept for the beatitudes come from the same word so it's being happy and blessed you shall be happy and blessed sowers upon all types of water now water we normally think of still water remember what david says he he leads his flock to still waters calm waters but those who have great power they can benefit from any type of water meaning this they can overcome all things they're not dependent upon a perfect situation they are overcomers and this is the idea here when it says they will sow upon all waters meaning or every type of water they're going to have fruitfulness they're going to be able to produce and they're going to set free the the ox and the donkey meaning that they are not going to need the work the labor a ox and a donkey they were work animals we're not going to need their their help their labor we are simply going to in all types of situation be at a place that is fruitful that there is production there is going to be in other words such an abundance that we can get rid in modern thought we could say we can get rid of the tractor of the plow all these vessels all these resources that we need to work in order to produce we're not going to need that because god is going to give us abundance no matter where we are we're going to be able to overcome and receive this is the outcome of god's righteous his just rule isaiah 32 gives us a glimpse about a change a glorious change that is coming because glory is the outcome of justice and righteousness in other words justice and righteousness produces the manifestation of god's glory and when god's glory is visible god does the work he produces he blesses his promises are
